Been there, done that, in 1986 when Daughter numero uno was two years old, and I strapped her car seat into the rear luggage area. She's now 24, and that was about the last time this GT was on the road. Of course, child seats were somewhat of a novelty back then, and most folks still allowed their kids to sit just about anywhere, with or without a seat belt. Heck, when I was a kid, my folks allowed me to ride in the cargo area of our 1962 Chevy station wagon on the way to the cottage or the ski hill. But there weren't even seat belts for the adults up front in those days.

As a few folks have pointed out, the rear area was NOT designed to accommodate a child seat, and there is precious little luggage space aside from that space. If you aren't carrying any other luggage aside from the children, then there is space for two smaller car seats. But you would have to do a very proper job of mounting rear seat belts and tether straps, or else the child seats will become little bouncing projectiles if you are ever in a crash
