That "hard plastic piece" is really a rubber plug that acts as the hinge. You need to pull harder on the retaier strip and pull it out of the rubber. Like Tom said, it'll probably mess up the rubber plugs, but if yours are hard enough to mistake for plastic then they could use replacement anyway.

I've actually never managed to get the glass out of the retainer strip without breaking it, so I can't imagine how much of a hassle that must have been.
