That driver side dipstick hole in the block is actually the main stream solution. It was used already in 60's in Rekord and later in 70's & 80's in Manta, Ascona, Rekord in CIH engines with steel pan.
Propably CIH Kadett B and CIH GT were the only ones using aluminium pan with bowl in the back and dipstick & hole in the pan itself.
I maybe cutting some corners with this statement but the main message is there...
