Unanswered: Help with batt. and alternator issue....

Just recently I replaced the battery and alternator in my 73 gt and for some reason the battery keeps dying. Also my wipers don't seem to turn off... can the two be related? What I've noticed it when I turn the lights on the meter starts to read between -30 and the center mark. Please help I realy like driving that car...

Was the problem there before you replaced the batt and the alt., or only after you did the job?

Cool

Sounds like your alternator isn't charging, since it is showing a discharge on the gauge when you flip on your lights. I'd take a volt meter and check to see if the alternator is working, or have it checked at Auto Zone or Advance Auto.

Check your wash foot pump for the wipers. If it is disconnected or stuck down, the wipers will continue to run.

The wipers would not and still won't turn off, so I uplugged them..... It's a duralast battery and alternator that I had gotten from autozone, both completley new a couple of weeks ago..... Also are ther supposed to be anything coming off the post of the alternator or is it just supposed to be that little black plug, I don't remember taking anything off of them. Maybe I plugged it up wrong if that's possible, which I doubt.....

Voltage Regulator Check

Not Charging:
1.Make sure GND wire between alternator & lower bracket bolt at engine block is installed/ clean. (no oil residue).
2. Check fusible link wire from alternator "'B" (output) to 10 GA RED wire.

Voltage Regulator Check from Opel FSM (Factory Service Manual):
a. Shut off engine.
b. Fabricate short jumper wire (6") with (2) male 1/4" terminals on each end.
c. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator harness at regulator, install jumper between D+ / DF on voltage regulator harness.
d. Start engine; charging indicator should peg in + position.
e. Shut-off engine and return setup back to normal.

Wiper Short & Wiring Diagrams

Use Search for GT wipers:
http://www.opelgt.com/forums/1e-othe...ight=gt+wipers

Opel Association of North America
Technical Info > 72 GT Wiring Diagrams

Doesn't help immediately, but I would search eBay for 73 GT FSM (Factory Service Manual) for troubleshooting and wiring diagrams,

Also, Destec GT Wiring Diagram is also very useful.
eBay Motors: Rev M Opel GT Wiring Diagram Poster by DESTEC Eng. (item 260119652553 end time May-25-07 11:11:40 PDT)

You can PM (Private Message from this site) JJ Wheatley / Destec and he will sell one for $25 + $7.95 S&H.

Whatever caused the problem with the wipers running (maybe a short caused by a leak in the pump bladder?), by unplugging the foot pump connector you cause an open circuit which will keep the wipers running. If you just want the wipers to stop until you can track down the problem you can unplug the wiper motor and not drive in the rain. Jerry
