Answered: Battery Not Charging

I have had my alternator rebuilt twice and over wound to 60 amps. I had it retested today and it is putting out the proper amperage.

I recently purchased a new regulator, but that was before I had it rebuilt.

When I had it tested today. The guy said the alternator needs to have a ground to be able to work and I confirmed this by resting the alternator against the side wall while putting the ignition in the ON position. The amp light came on as if the system was operating properly. When I remounted the alternator. The amp light would no longer turn on when the ignition was in the ON position.

So, my query is to how the alternator grounds to the body of the car. When I look at the mounts. There are rubber spacers that keep the mounts in place. So it isn't through the engine.

I was thinking that it could be grounding through the regulator and if thats the case. I think I may have blown my regulator since I had it hooked up before I got it rebuilt to fix the initial problems I was having.

NOTE: The car was charging prior to all of the work being done and the regulator being replaced.

Sub-Note: I would put the old regulator back on, but I threw it away not thinking. So, I have made a mental note to mark any parts I think are bad and retest them later.

there should be a short wire from the body of the alt that gets fastened to one of the mounting bolts , guess yours is missing or you have forgotten to attach it

Would you be able to identify or tell me the location of this short wire? Is it the black wire that comes off the back of the alternator that connects to a black box style piece mounted to the back of the alternator? If that is it... then I know where my problem lies and you are correct in the fact that I have reconnected the alternator incorrectly.

Thanks for your help. You have helped a great deal in resolving my problem.

Here is a picture posted by Otto that shows the proper location and color of the ground wire. HTH

In the image, I see how to ground wire connects now. Mine is missing so that makes sense as to why it wouldn't charge. However, it doesnt show the point where the ground wire connects to the alternator. Is that conneced to the same point as the capacitor or to another nut that is behind the capacitor in the picture? or does it even matter where as long as it is connected to the case of the alternator?

Sorry they are such lame questions, but I just put out $150 getting the alternator a complete rebuild.

Anywhere to the case is fine. The OEM attachment point is to the end of one of the long screws that holds the alternator halves together.

And if you want a really good ground, make a new longer wire and attach that to the ground wire that goes to the engine ground bolt [near the oil dip stick] and comes directly from the battery, see the photos

This is a Bosch altenator, the one in Otto's photo too

you are right Otto, I looked in my own stock and found the same type you have and it was marked Bosch.
Those are the 35 Amp types and mine is the 45 Amp
