As long as it's a 20 to 30 amp. relay & correct gauge wires it should be o.k. HTH

What's going on here is that a relay is being used to power up the starter solenoid. Thus the ignition switch's "start" contacts are being used to power up the relay with a very tiny amperage. In other words the ignition switch doesn't have to pull the big load, it's just telling the relay to do it. Thus the spark that occurs in the switch is smaller, the contacts last a lot longer.
Relays are the big thing these days. Cars didn't use to have but one, it made the horn honk. Nowadays there's a whole bunch of them, practically every electrical function on a car uses them, sometimes in pairs even. Fifteen amps for this start function is probably enough, twenty is better, thirty is better yet. The more amps a relay can handle the longer it will last at a lesser load. Relays tend to baffle people. They aren't complicated, you just have to think of them as a switch which is electrically operated by another switch. Look at one closely, they usually have a schematic printed on them that shows you how they work and what terminal does what. Also there are cheap ones and quality ones, I have best luck with actual Bosch brand relays. There are lots of relay questions here lately, maybe we need to hold a class on them and show the schematic and how they can be used to do neat things, and above all, how simple the concept is!
