Unanswered: Replace Opel Gt Alternator

Hi,

I have a 72 Opel Gt that I am having power problems. I can only run a few electrical at one time, if I try too many some items do not operate. When I measure the 12V input coming into the car, I see a drop in voltage with each item I activate. I assume that I need to replace my Alternator and the voltage regulator.
I searched around, there are not too many places that sell Opel alternators. Has anyone purchased an alternator from carparts.com , built by Reliance Automotive (they offer 35, 45 and 55A options (~$60)? I also see a large difference in pricing on voltage regulators. I want to keep as much noise from by stereo as possible, do some voltage regulators work better than others?

Can anyone comment or provide other options?

Thanks!

Rod

Baz,

I appologize for using up the bandwith. I did follow the links <opel Forums> <Technical Forums> <Group 1 Electrical> <Starting and Charging> I ONLY saw two post. Forgive me for not knowing the site or maybe my setup as well as you (with over 3000 post).

My main question was if anybody has used a "Reliance" starter and if any voltage regulators did better with reducing noise. It would be VERY helpful with your welth of knowledge to point me to those posts.

If possible can you please point me to those threads about Reliance alternators and noise on voltage regulators I still can not find them.

Thanks for your help.

Don't Bother ...

Don't need to muck about with strange breeds of alternators - just fit a standard GM 'one-wire' alternator for less than $40 and get rid of the old voltage regulator altogether.

First, a much more likely culprit for your 'power' problems is the regulator itself. Sounds like it is not functioning. When you turn the ignition key to the 'on' position, is the idiot light in your ammeter on? If not, your alternator will not 'charge' at all . . . ever!!!

Second, regulators are typically not a source of radio noise, the alternator/generator is the more likely culprit. In ALL the Opel FSMs, they recommend installing a capacitor (condenser) between the + post and ground to reduce RFI when installing a radio.

Third, I've not had any problems with parts from carparts.com, but would suggest you check out rockauto.com, my personal favorite.

hey no problem the forum has a 2 day default when you look same as most forums
on the bottom left of the page is an option box that says 2 days open it and you get 2day 7 day 2week 1 month and so on and from begining

Thanks for the replys and links. I need some time to read over the article, but the GM solutions looks very good. Also thanks for the supplier link to rockauto.

Just a note.

I am just now starting to work on my Opel and do not have a lot of experince. When I ask a question on this site, it is VERY helpful for an expericed Opel owner to, Say - Hey, do not do that, look here at this solution... Many times, I may have passed over that thread not knowing it.
