Unanswered: ignition switch trouble

i got to drive my opel for the first time in about 4 months or so and i went to start it up and my brother who watches it while im away had been saying it wouldnt start from time to time and the battery would be dead every know and then well i gave it a nice wash yesterday and then went to go drive it, i pumped the gas a few times and it started after a couple cranks of the engine well i was sitting there letting it warm up for about 5 minutes or so and as i was about to close the door and take off the whole steering colum starts smoking so i immediatly turn it off and switch off the fuel pump, found it was smoking from the steering colum on the left side right behind the ignition switch, my ? is, is it the switch is it a loose connection inside the steering colum, and will i need to replace the ignition switch as well how hard is it to do, any ideas are hellpfull.

OGTS repairs the switches but they need a core.

These might help:

Don't just concerntrate on the switch - you may have a short in the column wiring - so unplug all the column wiring and check EVERY wire out with an electrical meter.
