Unanswered: side gapped spark plugs??

While at the last Opel get together, the idea of side gapped spark plugs was introduced to me. Basically.....you cut the electrode off the top of the plug and gap the thing from the side and this is supposed to give an even spark. The electrode then can be marked on the plug in a place thats visable, and you can even line them up from the outside of the engine so as they all are at the top or bottom.
Now, my question is.....has anyone done this and how much of a benefit is this really?? Sounds all good and well but was wondering if there was a real performance gain from going to all this trouble. I dont want to ruin a new set of NGK's as they are a bit pricey......info???????

I don't do it on my Opel, but on all my higher-performance drag cars I usually do. I've never noticed much of a difference from a performance standpoint, but they don't foul quite as easily for me when I have to do a lot of cold-starts. I don't, however, index all of the plugs.

Use a set of old ones

I've even heard of some one who drilled a hole in the ground electrode, the same Ø as the maine electrode, they claime that the spark will go a bit thru the hole and ignite the mixture better
