Unanswered: compufire ignition

Hello listers,
Been cruisin' the google hiway, lookin' for
a hot deal on the Compufire dis ignition.
Had been shopping for a Crane xr3000 but
realized, once I bought that and a comparable
coil I'd almost have what a compufire ign.
would cost, so...I'm in the market for the
compufire setup. Anybody know of any hot
deals going on? Best I've found is about
$220.
Don.

compufire

Hey Don, I just bought the compufire for my GT...after much searching DoghouseRepair.com 1-775-727-9344 had the best deal and great to deal with...paid $227.00 for the unit but you have to buy the tach adapter to inable your tach to work correctly...it was $30.00 I think

Am going to install mine this Saturday (Feb 28) if all works out and we intend on shooting video of the install and convert to DVD and then post to the forum...also will have pics of what it takes to install the Compufire

I will keep you posted on the results, not only the performance which I know will be a big improvement.....but reliabilty of the Compufire is awesome

Hello Steve,
Lookin' forward to your results.
My install should be pretty easy compared to a GT.
I actually have room in the engine bay of the wagon
for such shinanigans.
Just sent away for some dizzy springs from Summit
so's I can alter the adv. curve while I'm monkeying
about with the ignition.
Little by little causes the little Opel to run better and
better. Having the seats done, that ought to add about
20 horsepower right there.
thanks for the quick response.
Don.

compufire installed 2.28.09

Yesterday was the install day for my new compufire ignition...I drove 2 hours in the pouring rain to John Lewis's (guyopel+) to have it done...John discovered many things "not right" with my GT starting with the carb...choke totally messed up..closed all the time...as well as incorrect jets...float incorrect...etc

After correcting the carb prob then on to the Compufire install...as you can see I had a total "birdnest" of wires...I left the wiring as it was until John could get to the install....as you can see it was really bad

I have put approx. 650 miles on the GT since I bought it 4 months ago...never stranded me...John's comment was "I don't see how you even made it down here with this mess" after pulling wires from the connectors some just fell out....I agreed with John for sure....check out the 2 connectors into a 3rd connector...all is now soldered & crimped properly

By the way GT goes to paint & body Wednesday next week so the engine bay will be nice and black....also need to mention two other experts on hand..Gene Smith (BQS4) & Edwin Monsees (Edwinopel)...special THANKS to these guys! Ok, I like to hang out with guys smarter than me...seriously, what I learned was incredible...

Need to mention I have more pics of the install and Gene shot video for future members install...will post soon....the compufire is not a simple bolt on item as I first thought...the video will show what must be done as far as the different firing order (remember it's made for a VW) as well as changes with the distributor...the install instructions can be quite confusing and have to be followed to the letter

Trust me, John made it look easy...after completion it really wasn't bad at all...that's where the video hopefully will be a huge help (Thanks, Gene)
I will add more later but to not be longwinded, the GT ran much, much better...Like WOW....got a chance to open it up for about 10 miles on I-85 N heading home....Huge difference...then more rain and had to slow down...I have to go over some curvy mountain roads to get home....right off noticed more power in climbing...3rd gear especially...half the downshifting as the trip in the a.m. was able to climb in 3rd where as before was constantly downshifting to keep my speed up...not any more...idle is almost perfect, correct carb jets will fix that...have to figure out ones for my elevation (4380 ft)

Here the installed Compufire minus some little bit of making things looked "cleaner" will be done after paint & body for sure....Thanks, Guys your the best.....Highly recommend this product....will post more as I put some miles on her with her new look

Looks sweet, how is it mounted, in the picture it looks like it is sitting at an angle. Maybe you need a custom bracket made like the one I made for my EDIS4 coil, it created a little platform to mount it to.

Basic really...John had some 1" x 4" (approx) metal pieces that we mounted where the coil once was then mounted the supplied bracket to these pieces...bent it back slightly...why, I don't know...lol... just looked cool I guess....I plan on doing some real "cleanup" to that area once paint is done..not with the mount, I like what John did, just the bay area in general

I will take some more detailed pics in the morning of the mount for you...as well as a shot from the right side looking at it...wanted SO bad to get her out today but snow and ice prevented it...is that compufire on yours Jeff? Tell me about those plug wires...brand?

Compufire is an easy install after you determine the firing order and proper orientation. I think Rallybob did a write up un it which made me look into it as a home made project.

I went a different direction, I have an MSD multi-fire system which is built into the LS1 coil I used. Coupled with the Holley, the engine snaps to high rpm's without hesitation.

Can't wait to ride my toy down the road!!

Mine is a Ford ignition called EDIS and works with a special EDIS module that is mounted on the firewall under the triangular coolant bottle in my car. I don't use a distributor at all, the timing is controlled by the MegaSquirt computer and the timing signal is produced by a trigger wheel on the crank. The plug wires are stock MotorCraft and will not fit unless you have the EDIS coil pack.

Tell about how the software is controlling the timing.
I've also went the EDIS route only using the mega-jolt.
Phased injector timing is not beyond reach. With the proper PCM.

Dan,
There is a great explanation of how EDIS works with MegaSquirt on the MegaManual Web Page, and is where I first read about it and why/how I decided to use it.

Steve, I know you haven't been on the site for very long, the history of my car and my Carlisle attempts is sort of in my "Off To The Sandblaster" thread. The answer is YES this will be my first year at Carlisle with an Opel and not a BMW. Now you also must realize that driving the M3 at high rates of speed (something I NEVER do) on the trip there and back will be sorely missed, but I will have to suffer and drive my pile of gold for the first time. Beer hmmmmmmm you will just have to show up and find out .......see you in May.

Yahoo! Got my compufire ignition on the way. Managed to
find one on ebay that was very poorly located, (only 19
views noted during the 2 day auction) Picked it up for 49.99.
(I was the only bidder) I've been wickedly burned by what I
thought were killer deals before so we'll see what shows up

It looks like you should be able to make your own tach adapter like the one I made for the EDIS system. Look at the bottom of the page that I linked in post 13, there is a small schematic there of what to do. You may not need the multiple diodes as I don't think the Compufire is wasted spark, but I am not sure.

Sounds like a killer deal. I try to find stuff like this but try to find reputable sellers. As long as the seller is reputable, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The compufire showed up on my doorstep Friday. It was as
advertised. The only things lacking were the mounting plate,
the plug wires, and instructions. Being the conservative guy
I am I was able to get a black set from Doghouse, I had a
chunk of aluminum that I made do for the mount, and will
be ready to plug everything in tomorrow. A query if I may,
There's only one power wire coming out of the coil pack.
Is the wire that will replace the resistance wire the only
one needed to be hooked up? On the old coil there was
another that ran from the starter to the same post. Also,
is the tach wire the green one that shares the other old
coil post with the distributor? I guess that's it. Thanks in
advance.

Don, the additional wire that ran from the starter solenoid was the wire that supplied 12V to the coil during cranking, so it will not be needed. The green wire you mention is the one that runs to the tach. Here is a color schematic.

Reading the installation instructions from Compufire for the Dis-Ix, the module heat sink cooling fins must be oriented vertically not horizontally or the electronics can over heat. Your installation looks horizontal.
