Yes. The '73's GT's outside taillights are half-red (brake and taillight) and half-amber (turn indicators and emergency lights). It has two separate bulbs and reflectors inside. The 'inside' rear lights are the back-up lights (surrounded by a red reflector lens) and have only one bulb.

Ben;
If you need to replace these units, you don't need to get them off another 73 GT, you can use the ones off any year Manta, they are the same.

Lisa's GT tail lights are fixed. After the brake job and firing off the engine, I started going through the electrical functions of the vehicle and found that none of the tail lights were working properly. When I removed the lenses I found that all the tail light housings were single element single bulb housings. All the GT's except 73 were suppose to have inner housings with dual element single bulb housings to operate the tail and brake lights. The outers are single bulb single element for the blinkers. I took the housing out of my parts car and everything is working as advertised now with the exception of the bright lights (I think its the column switch) and the reverse light (will trouble shoot when I get to it). I am hoping that in the next couple of weeks all the gremlins will be exteminated and Lisa's GT can go home to her.

An easy way to troubleshoot the reverse light on a manual trans is to remove the two wires off of the transmission switch(under the car) and connect them together. Turn ignition to the "on" position. If the light goes on, the switch on the transmission is bad. If not, it is then in your wiring

Also, take the light off of the rear of the car and pull off the wires, check them for 12 volts with the car in reverse. If you have power and the bulb is good then you have a bad connection inside the fixture. Take the whole thing apart, even if you have to drill out some rivits, clean everything, and put it back together with screws, problem will be solved. I don't remember if the switch in the tranny supplies ground or 12v, but you should verify that you have a good ground as well.

Is it possible to put the "old color" (the red and the amber) lenses on '73 (with the manta lights) GT? Or do i have to replace everything to get that older look GT?

Ths for your answer, but...
I like to know if i can keep the base (from the '73 taillights) on the car and just change the lenses? With other words, are the '73 lenses interchangeable with the lenses from the earlier GT's? Thx. Rini.

Simply, No. You will need a new reflector for the brake/parking lights. You can use the reverse light reflectors for the yellow turn signals, just move the turn signal wire to the reverse light reflector. The reverse light will have to move under the license plate. You will have to drill some holes for the reverse light. The turn signals will have to move to the outer holes and the brake light/parking light assembly will have to move to the inside holes. It can be done without too much trouble. HTH

More Lights
I like the idea of split orange/red outer lights and full red inner to get as much red brake lighting as possible on the back of a GT.
Moving my reverse light under the rear bumper on the driver's side to 'clean-up' the rear of the car - it sticks out like dogs' b......ks in the middle.

GT back-up light
My new winter project is the replacement of the back-up lamp on my project GT. After some research I have decided on using the Mini-Cooper pre 2005 back-up lamp. It will require cutting a hole and fitting the light on the rear panel which should not be a big task for anyone with a hole saw and drimmel tool. This light put out far more light than the Opel and should be a worthwhile endever. The light is available from www.myminiparts.com for $25 and the wiring harness for $14 (Part numbers MMBUL & BBLH) if I run into a snag I will post the problem, wish me luck.

Union Jack
The name Mini-Cooper is and will always be British, in England there has never been and automobile that had as many after-market parts available as the Mini, sort of like the American 55 Chevrolet. However there is room for improvment on the concept of this car. BMW just happened to capitalize on doing the improvments and used very slick advertising to promote and market the product. Anyone can see that it worked by the sales generated in this country. It is the new and improved version of an icon in automotive engineering sort of like Rover taking the GM light weight Buick motor, improving on it and using it as a power plant in several vehicles, including Morgan.

Mini mania
I have a friend that was a bigger Mini Maniac than I was an Opel Nut. He had about twelve at one time (everything from the panel truck to the woody wagon to the Cooper Super S) He even made a little business out of them, he worked for the US government and went to England about three or four times a year. He would buy Mini parts have them loaded in a container and shipped here. I would say that without a doubt he knew every nut and bolt on one and was in the top 5 in this country wrenching on one, stock or modified.
