Yes the headlights are supposed to come on when the headlights are rolled over. The GT I bought had a toggle switch too. I just replaced the headlight relay and everything was back to normal. There are several threads on headlights and the wiring. I used the wiring information from these threads to check out the circuits and verified that it was the relay that was bad.

Mark, on Willit?, my 72 GT, there are 3 microswitches. 2 in the driver's side rotating mechanism and 1 on the passenger side. Only one on the driver's side powers the headlight relay. The other 2 are for an unlock indication in the instrument panel light cluster between the tach and speedo. There is no switch on the headlight lever. There is an excellant tech article by Wayne Torman on the OANA website for disassembling the headlights and accessing the rotating mechanisms. Also Keith Wilford on this site has done an excellant thread on repairing the rotators. In that thread I have a post showing the microswtches and the color coded connections to the microswitches. If you wish to make your headlights like original, I will advise you it is NOT a weekend job. I would suggest you download Wayne's article for disassembly of the headlights and buckets, then read Keith's thread on the rotators. HTH.

To add to GtJims response, get a service manual for your year car and when they come up, Destecs electrial schematic. Books for cars.com sometimes carries manuals, and they come up on Ebay as well. Happy reading, there's a LOT!

You Rang!
As Maynard would say, "You Rang!"
You can contact me directly if you need one. Have 6 posters ready to roll, and Rev M is available (made the ignition switch larger and easier to read, as it is the heart of the car, and separated off the turn signal switch-euro parking light switch to show that is separate from the ign switch--creeping embellishments, I call them. And Rev L and M show the windshield wiper switch 'schematically.' yada...yada...yada... email:jjwheatley2003"at"yahoo.com Mod edit: changed @ in email to "at" to block spammers.
