Unanswered: Dash light for Headlight on when HeadLights are closed

Hello,

My 1969 has a white indicator light in the middle cluster between the speedometer and tach. When my headlights are rotated shut, the light is always on. When my headlights are rotated open, the light goes out and my headlights go on. Any suggestions on how to make the light go out when my headlights are shut? I think this light is supposed to be on only when the headlight buckets are in the rotating state, neither shut or on, is this correct????? I saw that there are micro switches behind the buckets, does anyone have the part number for these switches?

Thanks
Tom

More than likely the actuating arm on the micro is not making contact with the rotating mechanism that's supposec to turn off the lite in the closed position. It could also be stuck, but, if it's working in the open position, I would guess the arm needs to be bent so it contacts the button on the micro. To check it out, mush as I hate to say it, the rotating mechanism has to be removed so you can see the action and make the required adjustments. HTH

Mine does it intermittently, so my guess is I've got a bad connection. If the lights are really locked closed, as my are, then you could just ignore it. The light is not very bright and in the day it's hardly noticeable. At night it would be more of a pain. Or you could do as someone here suggested to me, pop the panel off the dash and take the bulb out.

incorrect wiring hook up?!?

Did it ever work correctly? Have you had the headlight bucket out recently? You may have hooked up the switch behind the rotating mechanism wrong. If thats the case then its as simple as moving a wire to another post on the switch, easy in theory. I have the same issue but haven't wanted to fight with the headlight bucket enough to fix it. I posted a similar question a while back ( http://www.opelgt.com/forums/2c-gt-headlamps-troubleshooting-removal-repair/5776-headlight-indicator-light-stays-when-closed.html?highlight=headlight+indicator ) and someone pointed that out to me. If you decide to dig into the problem post back how you make out. Maybe I'll be motivated to fix mine.

I have the same problem occasionally and believe it is in the microswitch. I am inclined to do as was suggested in your last sentence, "pop the panel off the dash and take the bulb out" until you put the car up for the winter.

I have the same problem too: To start with the white light in the dash would come on when the headlights were turned down and the light would go off when the headlights were open, (just opposite of how it is suppost to be.) Now the white light in the dash stays on either way. Anyone have any good ideas?

liz i think the bulb out opption would be best as an easy fix . anything is better than taking the rotating mech out to test the micro switch ,and it is not an important safty light that has to work like the brake test light or alt idiot light

So true Baz! You know everything has been replaced from new stuff from OGTS, and followed a chart from Destec.

Depending on the year of the GT, there may be only one micro to operate the headlight indicator, in the driver's side bucket or there may be two micros, one in each bucket. The correct operation of the indicator lite is for the lite to come on anytime the buckets are NOT in the locked up or locked down position. The cause for the lite to be on in either locked position could be the actuating arm is not depressing the button on the switch, or the button is gummed up and not moving. Either way, to fix the switch, the rotating mechanism must be removed to adjust the arm or clean the switch button. Wayne Torman has an outstanding article on the OANA website to disassemble the buckets to fix the problem, and Keith Wilford has posted a great thread on the care and feeding of the rotating mechanisms. Use the site search function to find that. HTH.
