Unanswered: One bright, one dim

The high beam switch does not work in my 70 GT. Initially it was stuck on high beams, so I had it manaully switched off. I replaced both headlamps, now one is bright and the other on low beam! The blue indicator is on now, and it wasn't prior to changing the bulb. Could the lamp itself be faulty? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Assuming you replace both with the same type of headlight. Have the headlights been rewired? I've seen them wired incorrectly at the headlight socket cause this. Test for voltage at the same terminals from one headlight to the other. Trying to remember if both sides are grounded separately if so then this could be a source for your problem.

They are both the same type of lamp, and the headlights have been rewired. The lamps did burn on low beam until I changed them. Now I have this issue.

Have you tried swapping the two bulbs to see if the problem moves - I have had bad bulbs right out of package. If no change you will have to inspect and test the wiring and bulb sockets.

Lights

One dim light is usually caused by a bad connection. Clean the contacts to the sealbeams and look for a poor conection from the wires to the contacts. Dave KI4UBK

If I recall correctly on my '70 the headlamps are grounded(brown wire) to the same location. Just to the left of the brake booster small sheet metal screw.

Angry

The problem with the lights seemed to resolve, and the high beam indicator went off. HOWEVER, within 15 minutes of my last post, while driving home from work, I slammed head-on into a friggin' deer. Now, I have a huge dent in the entire front section of the car, one light bucket pushed back up, emblem gone, deer hair, slaber, and feces all over the place. Lucky the windshield didn't shatter. The thing went flying over the car. Sorry if I'm off topic.

That's horrible! It sounds like you are OK but that's a tough break for your car! I hope you can get it fixed back to its original state.

Good news is I'm covered by insurance. As far as I can tell, nothing mechanical is damaged, other than one headlight bucket. It did bend the bumper, and it was a really nice one.

Looks like they'll need to foot part of the bill for a set of SS ones.

Be thankful that the front of a GT is low, that deer get cut off below the knees. We had a co-worker here, who used to drive one of the first generation Geo Metros, coming to work one morning, he hit a deer, and LOST!!! Totalled the Geo....

That would be great! But I'm not holding my breath on that one.
