Unanswered: temporary microswitch bypass on gt

i seem to have lost my headlights to the microswitch gods and don't have the time to tear apart the bucket to see what's the problem right now. the lights do come on when power is applied to the y/b terminal on the headlight relay so it's not the relay. if i pull the left marker light wire from the fusebox and connect it to the y/b terminal, i should get headlights if i flip the parking light switch on the dash and the left parking lights should be powered by the wire coming from the headlight relay, right? any potential overload on the wires?

Bob,

I don't see why there would be a problem with your temporary solution, the relay is still carrying the electrical load.

It all depends on which of the 2 or (3 wires, euro turn signal switch) you use. One from the parking light switch, (good), one from the relay or euro turn signal switch (bad). Best bet is to pull all 2 or 3 Gray/Black wires and use a VOM to find system voltage with the parking light switch activated. HTH.

Good point! The Destec diagram note 3 says you can disable the Euro light function by pulling the wires at the fuse block positions F2 & F3. Don't forget to insulate them. That would be the terminals at the 2nd & 3rd fuses with 3 wires each attached, 12 ga. Gray/Red & Gray/Black.

Why cant you temp. short the black to yellow/black and bypass the micro switch? And place a toggle switch on the ground side of the headlamp relay?

That's one of the standard fixes for a headlight relay microswitch malady. What Bob's asking, and is a frugal fix, is to use what's already there. No wires to mess with switching terminals, no switches to buy, no holes to drill to mount the switch, and pretty neat troubleshooting for a fix, I might add. Could be something to consider when this problem comes up again, and I'm sure it will.

i just didn't want to be messing with new switches, cutting wires, drilling the dash when eventually i'm gonna just fix the %$#%microswitch anyway...that and i couldn't drive the car in the dark to buy the toggle etc. it does work (yay) and just makes use of the existing parking light switch.
btw, i was changing the master cylinder when this happened. could i accidentally have hit/damaged the switch somehow? i know they are relatively close but i thought it was a little more protected than that.

Bob, it's possible that you could have separated the Black or Yellow/Black wire in the main harness that runs by the MC to the headlight bucket. Especially if those wires ever got hot because of the headlight wiring going south at the rotating mechanism. Just a thought.
