Unanswered: Where does this wire go?

I was repairing/replacing some wiring under the hood, and found a black wire, with a grey shield over it coming from the wire bundle below the coil. I checked the wiring diagram, and can't seem to locate it. thought it might go to the coil. Thought I should ask before. I trimed the wire back, and added a yellow extension as you can see in the picture below. Any ideas?

Wire

There is a black wire (may have a red tracer-can't remember) that goes through the harness from the starter to the coil, this provides A full 12V while cranking over the engine. This may be your wire. There is another wire that is semi transparent that goes to the coil, this is a resistance wire and it goes to the coil. Then there is a green wire that goes to the distributor and also to the tachometer from the neg side of the coil. I bet it is the starter wire you are in question of

On page 2 of this thread there is an excellent diagram by Tekenaar how to connect all the wires.

Was the vehicle running okay before you started this repair? Since you've peeled back the insulation I guess you're sure the wire is black. What size/gauge do you think it is?

Check the + side of the coil, there should be a 14G Black wire and a transparent wire hooked up there, as stated earlier. The only other Black wire in that area woulod be a 18G Black wire in the alternator regulator wire bundle of three wires, that also include a fuseable link going to the Blue/White wire to the ammeter warning light. HTH.

Ron, I thought about this also as it looks like from the picture that's is what it might be except I can't recall ever seeing any of those three wires inside a gray sleeve. I even wondered about it being the temp sending unit wire hence my question about the color.

Doggone it Harold, you're quite correct. The alternator to regulator is in an asbestos kinda sleeve of woven material. Musta been another session of "old-timer's" disease. Looks like I'm gonna have to read and re-read some of these need help threads closer. Yeah, temp sender wire that goes along the front of the rocker arm cover. Of course not having a 1.9L engine anymore doesn't help either.
