Unanswered: 72 gt wiring Harness

After having the my 72 gt in storage for the winter, i noticed that the wiring harness is in not that good of shape as i thought it was. Being thats its pretty old does anybody have a good wiring harness that they would be willing to sell? Or does anybody know where i can get either a pretty close match or aftermarket version? Do any companies make a replacement? Any help or a point in the right direction would be cool. I just need the harness that goes to the front of the car. If it has the rear wires thats cool but the rear wires are okay on mine. Thanx Nick

Nick, here's a hint or two. First off, if it hasn't been done already, you'll need to replace the headligjht wires, specificly where they go through the rotating mechanism. Next you must get a DESTEC wiring schematic from J. J. Wheatley, it's a 14" X 22" color coded, wire gaged, plastic laminated, piece of art. He's listed in the member's list. To rewire your GT, it's really simple, kinda. Start at the fuse panel and disconnct the wires that run forward through the hole above the windshiel washer pump, noting the colors of each wire. You can use standard auto electrical wire and do what I did. Some of the old wires will be good under the gray tubing, I used regular wire and spliced in a foot of the original color-coded wire on each end. Of course there are standard colors used in some circuits, so splicing those won't be necessary. You can get all the connections and butt-end solder splices at RadShak.along with srink sleeving. Do not use crimp type connectors or you'll have problems. I used them but took off the plastic sleeves and soldered all my connectors and used shrink sleeve on them. One thing you must do, as with any electrical circuit, is be sure the connections are good and clean. Especially the ground wires, forward and outboard of the radiator support. Good luck with your project. HTH.

Information Link

You can save money, by buying the wires and
making a replacement headlight harness yourself.
Information on how to do that, and how to install it, is here:

Headlight Rewiring

The General article that links to it, is here:

Head Light Harness on eBay

eBay Motors: OPEL GT REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT WIRING HARNESS KIT (NEW) (item 320106711901 end time Apr-25-07 15:43:50 PDT)

Think this is just the harness for head lights only.
Expires today at 15:43 PDT.

http://www.opelgt.com/forums/1d-wiri...-thread-8.html

I also rewired with similar workmanship as Ron. Prefer non-insulated terminals, crimped/ soddered connection, and then shrink tubing. Definitely should buy DESTEC GT Wiring Diagram.

um, reality check

The Destec wiring diagram is specific to a single year of production and includes numerous changes to the original parts and wiring as he saw fit. That's all neat and wonderful if you want it non stock. LOOK FOR A FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. do it right and do it once with stock parts you or the later owners can follow or a real mess that takes several wiring diagrams to fix.

Don't get me wrong, JJ has done alot for the reproduction of wiring. Call it like it is. The Destec wiring diagram has it's limitatations for other years and for those that use stock parts.Purchase a FSM and then you will see how your electrical system is wired before you look into rewiring it.

years 70-73

The DESTEC Opel GT Wiring Diagram Poster is for years 1970 thru 1973.
And 1969 is not all that far from being the same.

It IS 100% stock wiring. No mods that "I saw fit." I used a caliper and scaled everything right out of the Opel Manual. I mearly moved things around to make them more readable and added note to ease troubleshooting and better-drew some switches to make them look like what they were supposed to be showing but not as clearly.

It took over two years to complete, six months full time. I personally would rather use it than ANYTHING that is in the tech manual ESPECIALLY the 1970 book. Black and White with DIN wire sizes, boy what a mess that is. That is my TCW.

Don't rely on the "FSM"

The Opel factory service manual
is notorious for both omissions and
mistakes. It also is written for situations
where factory replacement original Opel
parts and tools are available, and
doesn't account for other real-life issues, like:
Rust, installation of non-original parts
by prior owners, bent metal and
stripped bolts, and where superior
modern upgrades (Weber carbs,
Pertronics ignition) should be installed.

IMO, the best "real life" solution, is from a
variety of sources: Consult multiple service
manuals, research here online (consider
responses among multiple posters),
read tech articles contained in back issues of
Opel club newsletters, and ask tech advice
from knowledgeable Opel mechanics and
reputable Opel part retailers.

Consider your options before making
a choice, and take all advice offered
with a "grain of salt" (don't just fall
for a sales pitch).

(When it comes to wiring, go for the
DESTEC schematics. Best available anywhere).

Photo Wanted

Can you post a photo on this board, showing that headlight wiring harness sold
on Ebay?

That way, others can be informed (or maybe warned), of the quality level that
went into that product.

I would email the eBay Seller (through eBay) and indicate you are displeased with headlight harness. Usually, Sellers will refund amount paid; sometimes less shipping charges. Uploaded picture from eBay ad, but hard to determine exactly what's there, as harness is coiled in a clear bag. Several harness were sold with Positive Feedback left.
