What kind of Opel? Could just be a plugged or broken or disconnected heater/cool air vent pipe or vent. Might just be hot air from the engine compartment. I would think that If somthing got that hot you should have seen smoke by now. Especially a short in the electricals.

On the GT, I believe the cases of all the instruments are the grounds, for the lights, and probably for the instruments. There could be a hot wire shorted to one of the cases, but I don't know why that wouldn't cause at least one of the wires to smoke, or a fuse to blow.

Each gage is insulated from the electrical system due to the fact they are mounted in a plastic panel. Each gage is grounded by a separate ground wire to the case for illumination and depending on the system indicated will have another ground source for the gage to function. If all your gages have 12V positive on the cases, then your ground wire to each gage is shorted to a positive source. If that is the case the gage illumination will not function but the gage itself may function properly. HTH.

If the cases are hot then it suggests to me that the ground wire is open. The cases are NOT grounded when they are supposed to be. That would make them show 12 volts. Install a temporary ground wire and see if all is not well then.
