Is it possible to repair fuel gauge sensor?

So it appears that my fuel sensor is faulty...

No biggie, but it is a little annoying to have to fill the tank up regularly since I don´t want to run out at an inopportune moment.

As I understand the wire inside the sensor can break, leading to a no-reading.

Is it possible to repair it (and if so, how do I open the tube?) or do I need to replace the entire thing?

There is a nut on the bottom of the tube. Easy to take apart. Easier to take the unit out and send it to OGTS and have them rebuild it.

I think I´ll try to repair it myself if possible though, I don´t really like the idea of sending the sensor over the atlantic and back just to have it rebuilt.

Are special parts needed?

Thanks, JTB, that link was very informative. I didn´t find it when I used the search engine.

I have found a source for chromatic wire, so that shouldn´t be a problem.

BUT does anyone know what electric properties the wire in the sensor has, ie resistance over length etc?

Do a search on the chromatic wire, nichrome wire and you will find the resistance readings on one of those links. I cant recall the site, but it is out there. I think what nobody was providing was not the correct wire as it didnt work out correctly for me; nobody did send me some wire gratus though.

The Opel gage wants to see resistance of 0 to 90 Ohms, I believe. You know the length of the wire if you have taken your sender apart, and have seen how it operates, hopefully you should be able to figure out what resistance/foot you need.

'nobody' sent me a chunk of that wire for free also. I think it would have been close, but I bought mine from OGTS.

In my DESTEC schematic, JJ checked the resistance at the Red IP connector, Pin #4 and ground, with various amounts of fuel in the tank and measured from 3-89 ohms resistance. Best bet to get the correct wire for the float sensor, is to check the resistance from the sensor spade lug and float body, either with the float removed or and empty tank.
