Unanswered: replacement lighter?

While on a seek and destroy mission in the gauge cluster I went in after the clear plastic light "diffuser" that is supposed to direct light onto the rocker switches and heater controls. This required removing the cigarette lighter. It is in rough shape and I use it to charge my ipod. Does anyone have any info on a replacement, or should I start scrounging for a decent original? Not sure how universal these things are.

PS I'm thinking of lining the light diffuser with aluminum foil to hopefully brighten things up, found some bulbs I think will work too as originals still light but have a dark tint to them.

The lighter elements are pretty much universal, I've got a replacement in Willit?. All I had to do was remove the knob and screw the original back on the new one. As far as receptacles, IDK. Could be they are of a universal type as well. It may be a plan to take the old one to the parts store and check for similarities.

It's the receptacle part that is "bad". Two metal tabs stick up from the base and touch the male part. One is broken in half and the other is broken off completely. It's that part I'm after. I'll stop by a parts place and see what's on the shelf.

Make a run to TN and I'll give you a good used lighter and you can pick up some other goodies while you're here.

I'm currently redoing my dash and just this morning decided to 86 the lighter and wire in a standard 12V plug with the cap. Quick trip to Radio Shack and $10 later I have one that slides right in and has the same spade connections as the lighter.

And I assume it has a nut on the back to sandwich it between the face plate/light diffuser/metal bracket? Only replacement I found on the shelf wouldn't have "bolted right up". I should stop by NAPA maybe, they list a gazillion (on their website at least). I'm surprised my original was still working to charge my iPod, it was messed up.

Here's how mine went.

The Part # is 2701556, Brand Nexxtech and sold at Radio Shack.

Picture 1 shows the slight work required. Notch at the bottom to fit the housing to stop it from spinning and I had to thin the dash from the back on the sides to allow the clips to grab.

Picture 2 shows all of the stock stuff in place. The outlet is secure.

Picture 3 shows the finished look from the front. Note that I had previously sanded down the 2 vertical lines that locate the stock lighter housing on the dash front.
