'Funny Wiring'
That is one way of describing Opel wiring - we usually use "tragic"
One of the first things to check out on a 'new' GT is the headlight wiring - it is usually so deteriorated that it shorts out and catches fire ... Sounds like the wiring to your wipers has a short or broken insulation somewhere - maybe even the fuse block under the dash (above the pedals) has some insulation breakdown. There is usually a horrible 'rats nest' of old wires under there too! Welcome to GT.com

There is a foot-operated, bellows-type windshield washer pump pedal on the floor close to where the depressed clutch pedal hits the floor. In addition to spraying water on the windshield, pushing the washer pedal causes the wipers to cycle on to wipe the water off. Check to see that you are not depressing the washer pedal at the same time as you are depressing the clutch pedal. Also, in many GT's, the bellows pump no longer works, but pressing it still makes the wipers come on. Bob |

Factory Service Manual (F S M)
There is a 1973 Opel Manta, 1900 & GT Factory Service Manual on eBay at the moment - not only wiring diagrams but heaps of useful other info too.
eBay Motors: 1973 Opel Manta & 1900 service manual (item 150212075469 end time Feb-08-08 07:27:35 PST) There is also a copy that has been loaded up on this site ... somewhere ... Here is a link to .pdf of the 1973 GT wiring diagram on our site: http://www.opelgt.com/photopost/data..._Schematic.pdf It may be that you are just activating the windscreen washer under the clutch pedal as mentioned in a later post - try the simple stuff first!

One of the things you'll need to chase down the trons on a GT is a DESTEC schematic of the GT by J. J. Wheatley. It's a 14" X 22" plastic laminated color coded piece of art. All the wires are color coded and the gauge wire annotated, along with helpful hints and notes on the care and feeding of the Opel GT wiring. It has been invaluable to me incorporating the 3.4L V-6 computer controlled engine harness in to the Opel harness.

I was looking for a thread about the GT wiper motor system because my wipers stopped working. The motor runs..I can hear it .. but the wipers don't move so I was hoping to find someone that had had the same problem..
Getting back to this thread I remember when I got my first GT about 1970 or so and I would use the floor mounted washer /wiper pump pedal so I would have "intermittent" wipers.

Both of my sons drove the GT in high school back in the '80's and they liked to tell their passengers that the car had voice-activated wipers. They would say "wipers", then tap the foot pedal to make the wipers start. Some of their passengers finally caught on and others never did. Lots of fun anyway!

I always found the foot window washer pump/ wiper blade switch to be very useful. I disn't think that other cars had the equivelant of intermittent wipers at that time. Imstead of reaching for a switch, you just use your left foot.

Craig, it could be the actuating arm has gotten disconnected from the motor shaft, or the actuating arms, they just pop on and off the actuating arm by a ball-socket attachment. HTH.
