"Stripe is on the right" I remember saying to myself as I hooked mine back up a while ago. Stripe on the passenger side.

If you'll look on the back of the GT ammeter gauge, the threaded wiring posts are stamped +B (Battery), for the red/white wire, and +L (Load), for the red wire.

Would connecting red/red-white wire wrong damage the guage ?
Hello,
Would connecting the red and red/white wires to the Opel GT amp guage on the wrong place on the amp guage cause damage. If so what might be damaged by this action. I think I just have some kind ground problem but all gauges are now dead and the turn sign does not work. Thanks for any help. Tony |

The amp gauge will just read backwards. When you are charging, you will read (-) and when you are discharging you will read (+).
It sounds like you disconnected a ground source for everything to go dead.

The gauges are powered by a Black/Red wire form a terminal block between the speedo and Amp/Oil gauge, which gets power from the instrument Panel Black connector, Pin #1, which goes to fuse #6, next to last, outboard, in the gang of four fuses in the panel. HTH.

The main IP ground is bolted to one of the fuse panel attachment studs. It goes to the Green Connector Pin #2, then to the spade lugs on the back of the Speedo, from there to the rest of the IP. HTH.

I think I'd better correct myself as my ammeter is reading backward, so must have gotten the wires reversed despite having labled them a while back. So the "stripe is right" could be wrong. Sorry. I wont' know for sure until I go back in there. Are we sure this won't really effect anything because I've been trouble shooting electrical issues and will stop and fix this if it could be a factor.

Jeff, instead of pulling the instument panel to switch the wires on the ammeter, you could do it at the studs in the center of the fuse panel. Just find the two pairs that go up inside the panel, not the two that come from the battery and alternator. HTH.
