Unanswered: Hiding the antenna

I noticed at Carlisle that some of you had removed your antennas. Where did you hide them in the car, what make did you use and do they work ok. I also noticed the antenna base on some cars with a screw driver slot where the antenna goes. Does this slot release the antenna and where can you buy them? I am ready to either weld the hole shut or use a standard style antenna.

Thanks, Bill

I converted to an electric antenna that is mounted in the rear quarter. Lots of room beside the package tray. From an 80's nissan if I remember correctly.

I have the same on mine, electric on the rear drivers quarter. I may change it to one like the newer European cars have it at an angle on the passenger compartment. I haven't decided.

The antennas that had the slot in them were, more than likely, original. The originals were from a company call Hirschman. There was a special little key that fit in that slot, turn it a 1/4 turn and used it to pull the antenna out of the base.
Most have changed out their antennas for more modern powered, or amp'ed antennas. Some, like me, have opt'ed for the euro look ones mounted on the roof, similar to VW and Audi, these are made by FUBA, and are amp'ed antennas. On my Sportwagon, I have one that is mounted on the inside of the glass, on the top edge, of the hatch. This again is an amp'ed antenna, seen here on ebay:
METRA 44-UA200 AMPLIFIED GLASS-MOUNT AM/FM ANTENNA NEW! - eBay (item 140116930320 end time May-29-09 15:03:21 PDT)
The choice is really yours.

Richardo;
It's not "THE" solution, merely one of them. As I said, I have one of these antennas in my Sportwagon, it works quite well. Really pulls in the stations. It should do well for those of you in Europe.

Opel Gt Source sells the antennas that you are looking for. They are a Hirchman antenna that comes with a special tool that you need to raise and lower it to lock it in place. I bought mine from them about four years ago, unless they can't get them anymore, they should still have them.

I've got one of those on one of my on-Opel cars and it works very well on both am and fm.
If you look real hard it can be seen on the very edge of the whindshield from the outside, but you have to be really looking for it.
