I'll buy the old one. The sexy lines and sleek shape do it for me. The new GT
doesn't even resemble the original. Not single piece of design engineering shows it has roots in the old GT. They should have taken this car and started design concepts from it instead of from the Speedster. Keinath GT brochure

![]() In contrast to the new GT the new Beetle and Mini are modern look-a-likes of the original cars. Fiat is also putting a new car on the market, the new Fiat 500, also a look-a-like of the original one. All that the car manufacturers want to do is to make a profit of nostalgic feelings.

I think that GM was trying to get as much out of the Solstice/SKY platform as they could. So a new GT looking like the old GT would be just too much. Think back to the GTO, GM wants to put a badge or sticker on something and try to get as many buyers as possible (getting ready for the firestorm about the GTO) and come up with as many lame excuses about why the car does not pay tribute to the original, trouble is not enough people bought into the hype that is why the GTO is dead now. If it sold like the new Mustang there would be a 2008 GTO.
Not knocking the Sky/Solstice platform I think it is one of the few shining spots that a car nut can look at in the GM stable. As to the original question.....it depends on what I want to use it for. Every day use most have become lazy we like cup holders, 10 speaker cd changer, satellite navagation, power windows, ABS..... I also think if you look at an old beetle and a new beetle, you can kinda go.....ya...I think I see it. Same with the Mustang or T-bird. The Mini to a lesser extent. The new GT nope not even close. The car companies can give you a mix of the new and old. GM just chooses not to for some reason. (I am not sold on the new Camero/firebird I will have to see one in person) I saw a pre production Mustang and went DOG DAM that is hot, sounds hot, looks hot I bet they will sell a ton of those things. Looks like they are doing pretty well with it. Last edited by cherokee; 09-21-2007 at 04:10 PM. |

I have always suspected GM saw some passing similarites between the Sky and the original GT and simply decided to cash in on the Opel GT name, with no real nod to the original GT whatsoever. The Opel version could at least have had unique sheet metal.
Very typical of GM. ![]() -Kurt |

I think that the new one would be a blast to drive and the fact that it is a convertible makes it even more appealing. But I don't have a new Opel GT bug, I have an old Opel GT bug. Even if I had the 30,000 or so, I would probubly just put it into an old GT. For that much you can give it a great stereo, handling, power, power steering, power windows, and power door locks or even make one into a convertible. You probubly get a lot of comments and looks driving the new Opel GT as well but I garauntee that you just don't get as much as the old one. I get people talking to me as I'm driving down the highway (even at 35-45mph). I get people trying to catch me as I go into to stores. I see people checking it out when I come out of school. Every day my co-workers talk about it, I don't even have to initiate conversation about it.

I agree with all of you guy in the posts above!! Why didn't GM follow with a contemporary version GT with lines, and updated features of the original car design? Only the shadow and the now young concept designers know for sure. My motto is you always retain things from the past when creating the future. The mini Cooper, Bettles, and others did. It is called foundation!!!

I have to wade in on this one, I do like ALL Opels, and I do like the new GT, but, referring to it as the NEW GT, I don't get along with. I love the looks of the old GT, and it has been stated before, in this thread, that if the new GT had some of the similar lines, or looks, I could go along with it. Not to mean if a new GT was offered to me that I would turn it down, I'm not that crazy, but, if it was named something else, I'd like it better.

I think the speedster captured the feeling of the original GT better than the new GT

Tough call.. Old one I have to say.
Drove an Redline Saturn Sky and was under impressed. I have to say both have one thing in common.. Tall torso 6'2 guys dont fit well in either.. or at least this Tall Torso 6'2 guy dont.. So I will stick with my Mantas.. ot in the case of a new car.. my GTO. Charles

How about adding a poll just for kicks? Though is seems that everyone is picking the old GT, which is a big suprise.

I saw a photo of the coupe version in the works. It looked like it was targeted at the 2009 model year. However, they were only doing a coupe version of the Solstice, so no Sky or GT coupe. That's too bad, because the Solstice coupe looked really good. Way better than the aftermarket hack job coupe I saw pics of awhile ago. If I find the pics again I'll post a link.

The one and ONLY original Opel GT.... the new one is NOT original, not when it looks so similar to several other cars. When you drive down the road in a 70's GT people, A. know what it is..... OR.... B. have NEVER seen anything quite like it before!! You do get the occasional "is that a vette" or the ever faithful, "I havent seen one of those in 20 years!!!" Dont think that will happen with the new GT,even in 20 years from now. It doesnt have enough character.

I have both.. the new and the old. No comparison. I don't even think of them both as OPELS. New Redline is fun to drive and I really like it BUT.....it just doesn't give me that wide ear to ear uncontrollable grin when I'm driving it. C'mon, you guys know about that stupid look I'm talking about. Every time I get near my old 70' Gt I get this silly feeling that just will not go away! New car doesn't do that to me. I just get in it and drive...no love affair going on!!

New Irmscher Opel GT
For your consideration:
Irmscher Kicks Up Power in Opel GT While my loyalties remain with the "classic" Opel GT, I have no problem accepting the "New" Opel GT as the spiritual succesor to the original. Yes, the new GT is lacking any stylistic reference to the original GT, but in terms of the functional elements they have enough in common to make it worthy of the name. Perhaps in a few years when it's time to freshen up the design, GM will finish the job and give the new GT a visual style more reminiscent of the original. I'm certain that some customizers/tuners (if not Irmscher then maybe Steinmetz?) will take on that task until then. JRjr
