Well, I could post a pic of my 75 Chevy monza TC with the original vinyl roof and point out the huge amount of rust underneath it, but I think you get my idea of whether or not to keep it.

Vinal
Your right, I can tell there is rust underneath,so I guess the sooner it comes off the better. I just wanted to know if anyone else had seen one with a vinal top.The few Opel owner's I've talked to had never heard or seen one with vinal. As I said ,it really detracts from looks of the GT

tops
I don't know if the dealer even installed them or not, never saw any literature about it. Most of the time trim shops did those. Most of the time it was for a reason...damage, paint peeling, fire???? At any effort, I will try to talk you into removing it, burning it, and never think about it again. They are ugly on that car.

The vinyl tops were a dealer-installed item, usually done by a local upholstery shop to bump up the price on what was a low-margin car for a Buick dealer. They may have looked good on a '69 Riviera, but certainly didn't help a '69 GT.
I had a buddy who bought a new silver GT with a black vinyl top and it just looked wrong, even when new. Then there is that inevitable rust. Don't replace the vinyl top! |

Save the Bits!
I have seen the edging trim for a vinyl roof go for high prices on EBay - so there must be one or two people out there who like the "look"
Save the bits of chrome/stainless trim that go along the outer edges of the vinyl!

I don't think all vinyl tops were dealer options. I know of several Opels, (manta's gt's and commedores) in germany that came with vinyal tops from the factory. I use to have a '72 that had one.
You might recall during the 70-75 period many GM cars came with vinyl tops. It was in style, like the fake wood on wagons, from the early sixties to as late as 85 (Le Barons come to mind as being the last holdout)

Hey Calvin, Thanks for the info, but factory item or not,I think the vinal needs to go.It's really ugly and doesn't belong on this car.I'll try to get some pictures going to show what vinal can do for a GT. Thanks GMAN
