Unanswered: fender badges
Second, I'm really beginning to appreciate all the moderator's and such who spend so much time cleaning up the site. You drink free in my town. (easy to say, dry township )I'm going to be using this resource alot, I always search first, don't always find the answer as easy as might be possible. Please don't hesitate to tell me to where, when, how to post, if I post too much, tell me to take a break. My new GT has fender flares, thus fender badges are off but I have them, would like them on the car. Options 1) wait until I redo the car in a year or two and put them in the spot 2) drill holes and attache wherever I like them as the car is very far removed from stock now anyway 3) cut off the pins, mount extremely powerful earthmagnets and make the badges moveable/removable. Unless these are rare enough that that would be really stupid. |

...I am glad you are not the type of person to jump all over moderators for making a change or if or when they give a directive I did move this to the body, doors, and bumper thread as I thought it would be more fitting. With the given options, and since you want the badges on, I would drill and put them were I would think they would look best. But if the pins were cut off that would give you the option of glueing them on where ever you would like.

If you're intending to leave the flares on, then find an airbrush artist and have them duplicted, in paint, on the flares. That way you can wax over them without getting dirt and wax behind the emblem. Just an idea.

Any comments on converting them to magnetic? I have lots of respect for the strength of the rare earth types, having built some electric motors, I know even the little ones are more than capable of holding those badges in place, if of course one doesn't put 'em over fiberglass, bondo, and such, although I'd bet they'd grab pretty well through more then you'd think. I'll try it out with an old set of Corvette flags I've got, that'd be fun anyway, stick 'em on there, then sneak them back off when the guy comes back to win the bet with his buddy about the "baby vette".
I'll work on that tonight.

I'd say stock location.
As for the magnets, if you epoxy a piece of metal on the backside of the fiberglass, such as down low, between the front wheel and the door, the magnet will grab just fine. The only problem is scratching the paint. I like the Corvette flag idea, but change one flag to the German flag. Very rare special German market only four cylinder Corvette! Maybe even get a Manta emblem and call it Mantaray.

Harder to Find ....
If your emblems have their pins on them please don't cut them off - good ones are getting harder to find. Ask about for some with broken pins and 'molest' them instead - or what are you going to do when/if you restore the car ??
BTW: On the back panel you should have just the "G" & "T" letters with a "1900" badge below them plus the small square "GM" badge below the centre of the rear window. Saw one of the "GM" badges go for $30 on eBay ......

My thoughts are to stick them in the original spots with the pins through the body. You say you are going to do body work later. If you don't like them where they are then do something different when you redo the body. JM2CW

No GM badge, since all other badging is correct (if not installed) I imagine the PO ditched it on repaint (not sure I blame him, GM did more harm then good, well, I suppose if it wan't for them, we'd never have had a GT) |

Try some junker ones off of ebay- cut the pins if still present and use some
3M adhesive tape and an exacto knife

old badges, pins cut off, gasket paper with a hole exacto'd in for rare earth magnets, on GT then on fridge. Nothing insinuated about 'baby corvette's and all that rot, just happen to have some vette badges.
works, took about 10 minutes to mock up, would use something more weather resistant (rubber?) if done for real, and more, or stronger magnets and possible something very thin over the magnets so as not to scratch paint.

You could put the badges in the right original spot if you needed....looks as though you have plenty of room from the pic you posted. Need to see more pics of the rest of the car to know if everything would jive....
And... what exactly is a rare earth magnet?? Joe

I have Steinmetz flares and they're fiberglass and smoothed in with bondo (I assume, I didn't do it, PO did) so I don't have much steel right where the badge should go. This is just for fun and it looked cool. A brief distraction from "real" work on the GT.
Rare earth magnet is the name for extremely powerful little magnets used in electric brushless motors (like CD rom drives). They can be bought in various strengths and sizes and two or three per badge is certainly enough to hold it tight to the car. I had some loose from an electric R/C airplane motor I had built. This is yet another field that I only dabbled in briefly so as always, other's know more. This magnetic badge thing appeals just because you don't have to have or put holes in your body panels and you can play with marques and mess with people's heads.
