Unanswered: Where can I get a new dash for my 71 GT (at a reasonable price)

I recently purchased my first car a 71 Opel GT, in Tucson, AZ. And the sun here in AZ does some pretty bad damage on cars. I've been looking for parts for the GT after I bought the car, and man there hard to find or there in Germany.
Does any one know where I can get a new dash that's not 375 euros, and the store is in America.

Dash It ....

I presume you are refering to the padded bit inside the front screen that goes right across the car.

There are very occassionally the odd one on EBay - but only used ones.
A NOS one would fetch close to $1,000 I should think and even a very good used one without cracks go over $500 as they all deteriorate and many people are looking for them all the time.

A company does specialise in recovering them - but you are looking at $600 and more ... plus postage both ways to get one done.

Have a look in this Thread:
http://www.opelgt.com/forums/1e-othe...sh-repair.html

Thus the 375 Euro one from Germany IS cheap - as long as it is a good one!

Yep - Plus Postage!

375 Euros is over $700US - so it is better to get your repadded there in the USA.

Opel GT Source --- Welcome has a Dash Cap that covers the top of the dash and they are in California.

Most GT dashes are cracked - probaly less than 100 'real good' ones left ...

dash cap?

now a dash cap, do you have to take off the old foam and vinyl then you glue on the new covering? or do you just place it over the cracks.

sorry Just bought the car a week ago and don't know much about opels

Just Dashes does them for upwards of $1000 now. So there is no such thing as a reasonably priced dash anymore.

The dash in my '69 GT was done by Just Dashes over 15 years ago. It cost ~ $600 back then and it still looks new today. The covering on ANY used dash you buy will be at least 35 years old and it will crack.

The dash cap that Opel Gt Source sells cap requires you to fill and smooth the cracks before you put it on. There will be a small seam on the front where the edge meets.

And in the Arizona sun- it will last about 30 minutes before it starts to warp up by the vents- mine did it in less than an hour in the Houston Texas sun.

So are there really only a 100 or so original in mint condition dashes around? How many people have a mint original? I've got one but never realized it was such a rarity.

Two OGTS Products...

Bear in mind that OGTS has two solutions to the dash problem:

1004 ($38.00)
DASHMAT FRONT, GT
For GT. A fine form-fitted cover. Protects a perfect dash from ultraviolet rays, and also hides cracks in damaged dashes. We stock red and black. Many other colors are available.

1023 ($130.00)
DASH CAP
Form-fitted ABS plastic, black. Covers tops and front of dash pad. Excellent for hiding cracks.

I have the DASH CAP and it is an above average solution (i.e., good value) to the problem if you can't afford the Just Dashes route. It covers the dash and extends down to just below the vent openings. However, it isn't perfect and I hope to someday go the Just Dashes route on my car.

Matt

Check this web site out, a new opel dash from opel factory for $580 US dollar
you have to use google page translator to view it. when ur on the page click on left interior, then on right dash it is the first dash at the top of the page.

Did I find a deal?

I just checked online, and it says 375 EUR = 575.51 USD.

And my previous GT I sold had a crack free dash. Will be on its way to Canada soon though!

And a third as well:

1025 : VINYL STITCHED DASH COVER $150

Covers entire dash pad. Specify color. Must be stretched and glued into place with dash pad removed from car. We stock red and black. Many other colors are available.
NOTE: Dash cracks must be smoothed and filled before installation.

Cheaper than Just Dashes, but takes some work. It requires that the dash be removed and cracks filled for a proper repair. I have bought the kit, including the console cover, but haven't installed it yet. John Warga here in Calgary has it looks like new, and will certainly outlast the OEM dash

The money spent on a JUST DASHES dashboard is well worth it. How many times will you sit in the drivers seat and not see the dash board? That was the question my brother in law asked when I was debating the best way to go. Also had the shifter cover done and the place for the ash tray filled in before it was recovered. Cost, 780.00 but I have never spent money so wisely. It is absolultly perfect and that was four years ago. I would expect that it will last many more years. They specialize only in restoring show quality dashes and from my experience, they are worth every cent. Take the dash out, send it to them, two months later you have a perfect dash. I know it's a lot of money, but what are our cars but buckets to put money in? You will never regret putting the money in the dash, no imperfections, no warping, it is a perfect fit, what else could you ask for. Save up the money if you can't afford it right now, the wait is worth it.

Jeff,

Welcome to the website. I, also, live in Tucson. I thought I was the last of the Opelphiles here. Give me a call at: 903-4576. I have a couple sheds full of parts and have owned and worked on Opels since 1969.

We can talk about dashes and the Tucson sun.

There's a couple of pics in my "Willit? Update" thread in the engine swap forum. Be advised, it's one of the longest threads on the site, so it will take some time to find them.
