Unanswered: Pop-out window grommets

I thought I had read something about this before, but I did a search and couldn't find any info.

Can anyone tell me the best way to replace the grommets for the hinged part of the pop-out quarter windows? Is there a good trick? Seems to me I read someone had drilled those out. Any info appreciated.

I did mine by drilling the pins out. If you only drill thru the mushroomed ends, the rest of the pin will drive out. By saving the original I.D. pin hole, at Lowes, in the Dorman drawers, I was able to find a threaded bushing, with the screw for the threaded other end, that fit the hole diameter perfectly. I had to shorten both the bushing length and the screw length to make the correct length fastener. Pretty easy to accomplish. Once you have one dismantled, take it with you, to shop for the bushing. I then replaced all the grommets with new ones from OGTS.

For mine it seemed that the pins in the handles that operate these windows just push through from one side (the bottom, which makes sense). A little WD40 would also help for the future. On the drivers side, the P.O. somehow deformed the end that should slide through and mushroomed it out. The other end was too large to go through too so I had to drill out the mushroomed end to remove that pin.

The grommets themselves just pop out. Mine were old and oxidized and had to be pried off. The new nylon grommets seem to tighten up and should be waterproof when the screws are tightened without needing silicone. I'll use a bit of that if they leak.

I drilled mine out and replaced them with spring pins. Do not attempt to hold the screw and rotate the bracket in order to remove them. There are tiny wings on the back of the bracket that keep it from rotating, if you force anything they will snap right off, don't ask me how I know this.....

Thanks for the input. I have the grommets on the way, but I dont really trust myself to do it without messing it up. Is there no way to get to that screw?

Nope, you have to grind/drill the head of the locking pin off on one end, then pop it out

If these are the ones that I think you are talking about, I was very careful and just used a pair of needle nose pliers and turned the outside part to unscrew it from the hinge. It came right off, with no problems. I didn't have drill anything out and it worked out great. You do have to be careful so you don't mess up the metal part or scratch the glass but with a little patience, it works...

Roy, I've removed them also without drilling the pin out. We must be special. With the grommets worn out it's not hard to remove the locking mechanism but reinstalling them is a little more difficult.

The best method is probably to drill them out and replace with a tension pin or as one suggested some type of threaded bushing.
