Answered: Mustang GT Seats

Ok so I found some really cool seats the other day at a thrift sale for $15 each and couldn't pass them up. Great bucket seats with side lumbar support and headrests out of a 1991 Mustang GT.

I brought them home to see if they would fit into the Opel GT. The back is just fine, the headrest just barely clears the headliner and the seat will pivot forward. I took the track off the Mustang seat and the power seat control and lumbar knob. I took the tracks off the GT seat and remounted them to the floor and placed the Mustang seat over the GT tracks.

The bottom of the seat ALMOST clears between the door sill and the drive shaft. I need to get the grinder out and grind off the shaft that held the lumbar knob. This will hopefully allow the seat to drop down a little lower.
Then I'll have to figure out how to adapt the tracks to the bottom of the seat.

Any ideas or pointers from anyone who's done something like this before?

Oh yeah... I bought these seats for a resto-mod project. So the point is to restore and modernize. Please no purist rhetorical questions like... What's wrong with the original seats?.... Nothing... I just want something different.

My nephew and I will agree, even thought the GT has destinctive original seats, they're NOT comfortable for distance driving. He has a set of Fiero and Recaros that he can swap in and out. I have a set of Recaros for mine.

Gene, how did the Fieros' fit and what type of mounting did you all do, I have a set but have not even set them in a GT, I just put them in the loft above my Office and I have some Racaros but I think they will be more suited for the Ascona. The GT seat with a little added padding is great for long hauls but I am not as big as you and seemed to be more suited for the GT seat due to body size.

Rodney;
The Fiero seats look like they belong in a GT. Here's a link to a pic with them in my nephew's GT. As to how they're mounted, I didn't look at them before he mounted them, but, maybe I can get him to pull one out to get some pics.

It was flat bar stock bolted to the seats on a horizontal axis. Then the original sliders are bolted to those. Creating a box.

I'm 6 foot and don't touch the ceiling, but I know that others have had that problem. The Recaros were in before the Fieros and I noticed that the Fieros were a bit more narrow then the Recaros. They allow for easier front to rear adjustment because they don't interfere with the stock floor mount seat belt guide. Both seat are very comfortable but I want to put the Recaros in my Manta. They're actually GTE seats.

seat question

I am looking the world over for a real good set of 1969 Firebird seat for my 1972 Opel GT in process. Has anybody else tried this one?

They don't fit, 4" too wide in back and ever wider at the front.....

Try something similar, Geo Metro 2-door seats. Same seats as the '90s Camaro/Transam but slightly narrower.
