Unanswered: Opel GT glove hole box

If anyone has an interest in a new replacement "glove box" for their GT
we are going to reproduce them for GT owners.

They will be an exact reproduction of the OEM box so it will fit just like
the OEM.

If there is enough interest we can start the production run next week.

Cost will be determined soon and it will be very reasonable too

Half of the profits will be donated to OpelGT.com

Just say YES count me in so we can get an idea on what quantity of raw materials we need to buy

BTW Carpet kits are still available for the Manta Ascona 1900 Kadett and GT, and the fuse box repair plate is a big success too. We have a few left in stock so order one soon

In late Febuary or early March we will have high quality OEM reproduction GT Kadett outside door rear view mirrors available for both drivers side and passenger side. I have them on my GT and it is great to see the passenger side too. Advanced reserved orders are being accepted 1st come first served.

All the best

Jim are the passenger door side mirrors going to be convex ones or flat?

Just curious - is the glove box replacement an insert that just slips in the opening without having to remove anything like the dash or is it more for someone that is in the process of redoing their entire dash?

Thanks,

Matt

Are the mirrors from a new vendor? There have been ones available from Germany for a year or so, are these from a different vendor? I'd be interested to see the quality.

These are exact reproductions of the round " metal chrome" or polished aluminum OEM mirrors which I do believe are considered flat mirrors.

Hi Matt,

The short answer is no they are not inserts
Wish we could make them as an insert that could be slid in BUT
in their infinite wisdom the Opel design engineers made them so they attach with 3 metal flanges that are held in place with 3 10mm nuts and washers to the 3 mounting stud/posts in the dashboard.

I imagine this remove and replace install could be done with some great difficulty while the dash is still in the GT I am really not sure if it is possible and with my back out right now I can not get under there to see if the 3 nuts are accessable.

I would have to say it is a cake walk with the dash out of the car.

Hi Bob,

They are so close to the original stock OEM mirrors that I can not tell them apart side by side.
So I will say they really look the same

I did see other mirrors from Germany and was not happy

I do believe this is a much better quality reproduction from a different vendor

The ones I had seen had a white plastic rim around the glass.
The ones I have received and the new productions do not have this awful addition.

Hope that answers your question and concern

I will post some pics asap I have one on my 1970 Kadett and the passenger side is not installed yet (hate to drill new holes into the door panels)

Thanks for asking

OK - thanks. As a future product idea, it would be cool to have an insert made of molded plastic that just slips in and remains in place unsecured. It would have to be made to dimensions just slightly smaller than the glove box insert that is attached to the mounting studs in the dash. This way, people could refresh their glove box area without having to remove the dash. Maybe an optional "lid" on hinges could even be provided if it could be made to look good. Just a thought...

Thanks,

Matt

Send advance order information to Usa Opel

The business email address is : usaopel@usa.com

What we need is a written committment to a purchase of said part(s)
from everyone so we know how many pieces to buy from the German supplier.

A promise to buy is good with a depost of $39.00 per unit.

Info: Name address and contact phone numbers sent to us in your email order.

Of course if you want to talk directly to Jim M just call 760 497 5360 to place a special order by phone.

Complete and full payments will be made (balance due) when we get a final price from the supplier, the more orders we get the less it costs for shipping postage costs per unit which has to be factored in to the price too.

The last batch of mirrors sold out before we even announced they were in stock. Seems like they are a much needed and wanted part.

Happy to help
Thanks for your support

Jim M

Matt good thought but the problem with an unsecured plastic liner or insert is that it would jingle and rattle and move up and down.
Also I think it may not look right.

These are to replace the exsisting cardboard boxes that have worn out.

Mike Brooks fashioned a lid on his box.
It is very nice with a handle on the top to lift it off.
Not sure if hinges would work as mounting them to the soft foam dash would be a challenging feat.

Just for the record IMO there is no way you could replace the glove box without taking the dash out. The heater/blower housing is in the way.

Another reason a liner would be handy if it could be secured in some fashion.

I did a liner in mine.....but I did it with the box out and then installed it the same as a new one. Not much help, except that the inside of mine looks like new, maybe better since I did it with black vinyl that matches the dash.

I kept thinking about a glove box lid so I tried my hand at making a prototype- I don't like the handle but it will do until I can find just the right type of handle to put on the cover. I am open to any ideas for a handle.

That looks great baronbors!.....maybe you could use an extra "gt" logo (with a screw jb welded to the back) with a spacer on it so it sticks up about a 1/2" or so...

What did you make the door out of?

Presently I have some "leather look" material covering the opening.
I like your idea a lot better

Both of these are excellent ideas! I like the first design better. It would be nice to have a little tray for a cell phone, coins, and whatnot. The cup holder may work well for those who don't have their glove boxes stuffed with crapola... Let me know if you ever make a prototype.

Baronbors, I like the way that it turned out. Not fond of the handle either. What about just having a 2x1/2 inch lip at the edge. Just enough to get your fingers on.

Rrossjr, I like the idea of molding in the cup holder but also like the clean look. I suppose I could swing either way.

LOL. I'm just a guy who likes to have it my way even if it's different on different days. That's why I have both a GT and Manta and I'm keeping my eye open for a 2 Dr Ascona.

Not perfect but not bad either. How about routing a hidden recess underneath to grab and using a pop out type latch like a lot of glass doors on entertainment centers have to raise it enough to get your fingers under it?
