transmission area...heat can feel good now that fall is here.

Have you price that stuff from whitney's Or pep boys?

Go to home depot for duct insulation..I am going to try it unless someone here has a better idea

Sounds pretty good, bucky, for the vertical stuff and rear area. I think it might distort the carpet too much, though, making it bag or bunch. You probably have new carpet w/backing, so let us know how it works with it. I found a web site that offers molded carpet with extra thick rubber sound proofing (about $300, I think), so I'm interested to see how it works for you.

I used the $32.99 "kits" from Eastwood with really good success.

Comes with 3/16 aluminum backed insulation, a can of spray adhesive, and a roll of seaming tape.

When I rebuilt the interior of my GT, I stripped the old interior completely out, Bought a couple of rolls of firewall insulation from PEP Boys, and laid the insulation on the floors, inside the doors, inside the gas tank area, up against the firewall while I had the dash out, inside the rear deck area, and along the trans tunnel. When I put the new carpet in, it layed flat and did not bunch. I cut all the pieces and put them together with carpet seam tape. It sure made a difference in keeping the road noise and heat out.

I'm resurrecting this cheap sound insulation idea. I have seen a Dynamat look-alike and it seems to me it is a sheet of rubber with adhesive backing. The stuff is cut and fitted to the inside surfaces of the GT to deaden the sound. Is this correct?

Now, out here in AZ, many roofs are coated with a black latex substance that comes in a 5 gallon bucket for around $50 and covers about 400 sq ft to about 1/8" thick. It is seamless and can take the heat of an Ariz summer and sticks to anything it touches and doesn't shrink. Fiberglass mesh is usually worked into the coating for extra strength and reinforcement. It dries completely so there is no "tack" and is an actual formed latex sheet when done.

So, my question -- Is this pretty much the same stuff as commercial sound insulation (in different application and packaging) or am I way out in left field with this idea???

For what it's worth, on the inner panels of my 1940 firetruck there are actual roofing shingles glued in with some sort of rubber cement. You can actually see the littly slots in them. Seems to work.

inthe roofing deptarment is an item called bythpaper ,just peal back the paper in it sticks about anywhere very nice sound deadner

I was assuming Bucky is talking about replacing the original insulation mounted on the engine side of the fire wall. 'Cause guys, you need to rethink any idea of using some of these alternative materials in the engine compartment itself. If it goes on the cockpit side of the wall - no problem.

On the inside of the passenger compartment - anything's fair game. I used the highest quality of felt carpet pad for the entire interior. Tacked it on with a high grade spray adhesive. Then I bought the carpet kit from OGTS and used the spray adhesive to fix it to the carpet pad. Also sound insulated the back of the car to isolate road noise, and vibration noises from anything metallic in nature located behind the flap & panel. Pulled up that floor panel in back and stuffed it too. Even used the carpet pad to insulate the roof before I installed the head-liner.

Haven't had the car on the road since I completed the carpet/insulation last year, so I don't know results yet. I'm banking they're good.

Also, I figure all that insulation will eliminate secondary harmonics 'cause I'm looking to put in a nice system.

OpelMutt, the sound insulation that is sold by Dynamat is a water based emulsion. What it looks like is fine particulate matter of rubber or even some sort of asphalt derivitive. When it drys (takes about 1/2 hr on warm days), you have a slightly rough texture, 2-4 mil thick coating. The texture (I think) actually helps to deaden sound. The stuff you're talking about would probabaly work, but would also be heavier (thickness of application and the denseness of the material). After I Dynamat'd my door panels, I could feel no appreciable weight difference. HTH

this water heater jacket is rather thick...but could have some good uses in vertical spaces?roof?overgas tank?..I went to home depot to browse ..for $20 ..I thought I would try so of this in some areas..they advertize R19 insulation value

Bucky, I think you hit the nail on the head about the water absorbtion. In the engine compartment, I beleive you want the 1/8" sealed reflection blanket, in the traditional upside-down "U" pattern. Not sure who carries it at the moment. You could use the W.H. wrapper under the carpet with the foil down. Course the R-value would be about 1/3 of the current rating. With the wind blowing around every-which way in the engine bay, I think the fluffy wrap would tear apart. The true engineers may have a different spin on it.

Opel GT Source has the firewall insulation pad -- it is pre cut to fit and has all the necessary holes and cut-outs -- $33.00. I got one a few weeks ago.

Svopel, you're talking about the passenger compartment side firewall kit or an engine bay kit?

The firewall insulation pad is centered between the driver and pax footwells -- directly behind the engine (engine bay side). It was an obvious item to replace when I removed my engine -- don't know how difficult it would be to replace with the engine in the car -- looks like it would be a skinned-knuckle job.

i ordered the firewall insulation pad from ogts $39 with shipping...since my linkage is apart but engine in..i will see if i can do it.
