Thanks to all the previous info. But has anyone tried using a reverse drill bit? We had 3 bolts {5mm} ones broke off. We took a sharp pointed chisel and made an indention in it then took the reverse drill bit {titanium} and reversed the drill and then very slowly drilled the broken bolts. The bit took hold and they came out very easily without disassembly. Our gears were o.k. so this worked for us. Maybe it will make it easier for someone else that is scared to take something apart for the first time.Good luck.

Ive used one, its called an "easy out" The "reverse" bit has teeth on it to grip the insides of the bolt (Once you've drilled a hole into it).

Gotta be careful here guys, there is a lot of difference between an "Easy-Out" screw extractor and a reverse twist drill bit. Although both are made from tool steel, the easy out will snap and break very easy and leave you with a real problem of having it jammed in the screw/bolt you're trying to get out, then the problem has just been magnified two-fold. Opeldean or Greensmurf20 have used the reverse twist drill with good success on some stubborn hardware. You may want to get in touch with them to get their source on the drill bits.
