Unanswered: GT headlight adjustment

OK did the search thing with no luck. It might be that I'm not using the right term. Anyhoo, now that I've got the micro switches working is there a way to adjust the throw of the headlight cable? What I have forund is this. Looking from the front of the car when the buckets are in the "on" position, the small post that actuates the relay switch is not contacting the locking devide to activate the switch. If I roll the lights very hard it will catch and the lights work. If there is a was to adjust the cable to push the lights over more to the "on" position I would not have to slam them open.

TIA

Henri

Headlight ajustment

There is a lock nut on the end of the cable, that allows you to ajust the cable either longer or shorter. You might try to move the cable farther out of that bracket and see if that helps. Also the three bolts that hold the bucket schakles to the rotator have a bad habit of backing out and allowing the schakle bundle to slip and not keep the bucket in alighment.

Henri, the rotating mass of the headlights is what locks the headlights open and close. If you look at the sector teeth you'll note that the last tooth is not a complete tooth, it allows the assembly to use the rotational momentum to lock in place, and also to operate unlocking mechanisms to allow rotation of the assemblies. It takes a good healthy force to operate the locks which, in turn operate the microswitches. You can adjust the spring arm that presses the microswitch button to turn on the lights. but that will turn on the lights without them being locked in place. You cannot lock the lights using a light force on the headlight lever. It takes a fair amount of rotational speed for the mass to contact the overcenter locks to lock the assemblies in place. HTH.

IIRC, there are several ways to adjust the cable actuation. One at the end of the lever (in the tranny tunnel). Another at the cable end (where it connects to the cross rod). Those adjust the total amount of cable movement, and the position of the lever in relation to the headlight position. And the rod itself can be adjusted from side to side from the middle clamp, which changes the relative position of each side to the other.

In general, if the headlights are about "even" at the same push position on the cable, then the cable and cross rod is adjusted correctly. A common problem is when the lever hits the end of its travel before the lights are fully opened or closed.

If those adjustments don't help, you probably have a problem with the actuator mechanisms. Read the "stuck" threads at the beginning of this Forum.
