Welcome to the site. There is a wealth of information available through this forum. Remember to please use the search button as alot of people have already talked about a lot of stuff concerning opels. Byw is that the most cancerous spot on your opel? if it isnt you may have better luck working on a less rustier version but kudoes for you for trying to get it back running.

Oh, it runs... You just can't sit in it. Well, passanger side anyway.
I don't like the idea of driving with other people unless I'm showing them something but it'd be nice not to loose all my crap down the highway or make any strange 'waaaafff' noises when I hit 45 e_e; Yep the body is perfectly fine and salvagable which is strange since it sat in a barn for 20-some-odd years... explains the floor though. Just a touch rusty everywhere else but I like its general junkyness...

See all curable rust... The interior is just rugged as crap x-x
Look at that sexy lack of muffler that broke off due to rust when we loaded it on the trailer... v_v; Yea, the whole bottom looks pretty rough. Not all of it that bad though.

all together now
"flintstones meet the flintstones they're the modhistoric family , from the state of georgia they're a place right out of history, sitting with her welder on the hum and suffers from a numbness in the b** " best stop there LOL hi sorry about that looks like a quick trip to night school is in order ( most places have a welding course some where ) you might get salvage floor pans from here if you put a want ad in the sales section but you can make new pans from sheet steel and weld then in remember to cut back to good steel to get good welds might be easier to get a price for a garage to weld it in if you cut back the rust and clean off old paint round the edges

Hi! welcome to the site!
Great when another Opel gets restored. I would suggest that you put the car up on stands and carefully check the underbody and exterior for rust bubbles or minor rust spots with the "dreaded"point of a "scratch all" to see the extent of the rust damage. Make a list of all the damage and parts required including chrome,mechanical,electrical,upholstery and price the cost of all the parts to bring the car condition to the level you desire.To restore a poor car can sometimes cost more than buying a good one.Some people just love the project or prefer to disperse the cost over time! New floor pans can be bought in europe or maybe Opel gt source has them, they can be fabricated or bought used. Good luck John

Welcome LegoDominatrix;
It was nice chatting with you last night in the 'OpelChat'! Looks like you have a nice candidate for a restoration. Occasionally floor boards pop up on the Ad Board, or I once read there is a type of VW Floorboards that can be used with little work. Anyone else recall this thread? With the welding issue.. try to find a friend or family member you could borrow a MIG Welder from, and grab some scrap steel to practice on. The welds don't have to be perfect.. as for when your done, you will probably grind most of it smooth.

Welcome to the site and to Opels! I see you are in Georgia. If you live in the Atlanta area, there is an Opel meet this Saturday discussed here.

A local pull-a-part might be my home for a bit.. they generally are cursed with Vee-Dubbs ;3
I do happen to have a mig welder though I've only used it for a ****ty spot welding on an art project e_e woot. Everyone has given me some form of Flintstones joke.. I think I like yours the best though.. its save worthy... My friend who also drives an older vehicle (73 super beetle \m/) is loaning me his welding bible.. must have taken a whole tree to publish e_e I can't make it to the meeting D: I have to work.. I thought they were going to fire me as I had tried so very hard to do... but alas... I think I'm working out the full two weeks of drag-ass x-x;

that looks fun... er, not so much. way before putting a welding mask on, you will be getting the cut off wheel out. You need to cut as much of that out as possible, and then grind all around, then find some metal to weld in. you may also want to weld in some braces to keep it all square, but Iam not to sure how much of an issue that is with the opels. Iam sure someone here would know though. Good luck, looks like you got alot of work ahead of you!
Oh yeah, and when you start to weld a new pan back in, you have to move around alot, no doing one long bead or anything like that, basically small tacks and you jump from like one side to another so one area doesnt get to hot. Last edited by bmxmann; 03-19-2008 at 05:51 PM. |
