Unanswered: Manta Upper Frame Rail

At the 2008 Carlilse I was getting rid of some old Manta parts. One part no one needed, and I am sure no one ever (including myself) thought anyone would need was the large frame rail section from the jackpoint up to the where the subframe connects. I couldn't give it away.

I hope I didnt throw it away and someone took it or I gave it to someone one and its sitting in thier collection of stuff. Because a Manta I foudn here in teh RIchond area is fairly straight and low in rust factor.. BUT that particular section is almost 90% gone due to rust.

I am still looking to see if I have it buried here.. but figured I would put out an APB on it and see if anyone has it.

It would be the attached part..

This is the front driver side..

The frame rail that runs from the jack point up the firewall, below the battery box to the mounting stud for the suspension cross member.

Its really a tough and thick part.. so not only is it surprising its rusted so bad and so throughly.. its doubly strange as the battery box is solid, as is 90-95% of the car. That and the door frame is strong... But this particular part of the car is so rusted as you can see through it from the engine bay side to the ground.. Never seen anything like it in all my years playing with Mantas. I will take pictures when I get the car.

Manta Frame Rail

I just bought one from Todd at Opels unlimited for $150.00 Jackpost foward. Sounds like your cay may have had brake fluid spilled and it ate all the paint off of the frame rail. Here is Todds number 909-355-6735. I call him after 11:00 pm est. That seems to be the best time. Good luck,
Massey
p.s. That is the only place my 74 is bad.

Prefer to just find the aftermarket parts I gave away

But I could try Todd too.. just thinking if this car does get rebuilt, I may do a aftermarket hot rod tube frame/suspension on the front. Especailly if I do a engine swap or something.

Just ideas.. Just hate to part a car this straight and solid except for that one area.

Charles - These were amongst the parts I donated to the cause when I moved to the Philippines. I couldn't give them away either. I'm not sure where they wound up but you might ask Gary or Duane or Gene. I think they just ended up in a box at the Opel parts booth at Carlisle. Not sure who got them but they're out there somewhere. -Scott D.

I don*t know if your part of the US has a rather good climate for cars, but in Germany rust issues in that area were quite common. I own an Ascona B with a still very similar construction and this part was rusted through as well, however not that severely. The reason is the fact that the frame is reinforced through two layers of metal spot welded together which makes it easy for humidity to nestle in. There was even one guy in a German Opel forum who started producing a repair kit for the outer part of the frame (the inner reinforcement is most often still usable).

Thats what I foudn so strange. I have seen the outer completely rotted away, along with the jackpoint.. etc..

But I have never seen the inner along with the outer completely rusted away.

Once I get the car here I will look over it after I strip it and if thats the only major rust problem as I think it maybe. Dr. Manta has all three parts.. and may go that route.

The key here is that I had all three parts here at one time and over the years, I sold or gave them away. So if I could find them first I could avoid buying them or at least having to pay all the costs of getting them from Germany

Charles,
Can you give me the part number that you are talking about with Dr. Manta for the front rails? I think I know which ones they are as I need them, too, but I just want to make sure I am looking at the right part. I am assuming both sides are the same.

IIRC these are the parts..

Längsträger vorne - Chassis leg front - 01410135 - 139 Euro (Universal)

Thats the innermost piece.. USUALLY not bad..

Over those rails are the:

Längsträger vorne links - Chassis rail front left - 01410013c - 39 Euro

Längsträger vorne rechts - Chassis rail front right - 01410013b - 39 Euro

They are specific left and right due to tieing into the firewall themselves. They also usually have some rust and need repaired.. but usually can be patched and not replaced.

IIRC this part

Längsträger - Chassis leg - 01410013a - 79 Euro (This is universal)

was an aftermarket part and made a little oversized and was to be fitted over the chassis rail to repair it cleanly.

I sold the 0140013a with the Jackpoints regularly when I ran GoinManta.
