Unanswered: name of a part...
anyways, its teh rubber boot over the lower ball joint on the control arm, right next to the base of the shock, actually. mine are trashed, and since i'm rebuilding, i need to replace em, but i ain't got clue one where to look.

over here the "lower ball joint rubber boot" would only come with a new ball joint ,as it is there to keep dust out (its sometimes called a dust cover/boot)
if it splits then the ball joint is normaly shot as dust and the grease inside combine to make a very good grinding paste that wears the steel away in double quick time
