Unanswered: front wheel inner bearing measurement..
Can someone measure the inner diameter measure of the front wheel inner bearing of a GT for me. I recently replaced the right bearings and almost had an accident while driving at 130km/u and both inner and outer bearings were breaking. I noticed afterwards that the inner wheel bearing, althoug the same as the one preveously installed, was not fitting the axe correct ????? In my opinion, to fit the axe it should have an inner diameter of 27mm. The ones I installed had an inner diameter of 29mm??? I see OGTS is selling new ones (nr 3038). I wonder if these have an inner diameter of 27mm to fit exactly the axe? Please help me out, because this would meen I have been driving with the wrong bearings for some time.... http://www.opelgtsource.com/catalog/suspens/3038.jpg Geert Last edited by gvy; 05-30-2009 at 06:14 AM. |

Got it!
Here are the sizes:
Inner (large) bearing - ID 1.0625" = 26.9875mm => so 27mm OD 1.98" = 50.292mm It is known as Wheel Bearing #A4 and is used on several Fords and many light trailers here. Outer (small) bearing - ID 0.6875" = 17.4625mm => so 17.5mm OD 1.57" = 39.878mm It is known as Wheel Bearing #A1 and is used on the same vehicles here. It looks very much like they are Inch Series bearings - not Metric sizes! BTW - they should be a sliding fit on to the spindles as the inner race is designed to turn slowly to make sure that not just one area of the race bears the load - spreads the load right around the bearing. So, I always smear a little wheel bearing grease inside the bore before sliding them on to the spindle. Sometimes the inner spins too much (usually due to over-filling the bearing with grease)which results in spindle wear - or too little (done up too tight or too tight on spindle or no pre-lube) which results in spalling on the downward facing part of the race.
