Unanswered: Upper steering column bearing

Hello,

Anyone out there know how to change the upper steering column bearing on a GT? The lower bearing is easy enough, just held in with a snap ring, but the upper??? Do you have to replace the whole pot metal assembly with the bearing in, or can it be pressed out?

Thanks,

jtb

Are you sure you need to replace the upper bearing? I thought I needed column bearings and when I contacted OGTS they told me to check the three bolts at the top of the column. The same ones you have to get to to change the top bearing. If your steering wheel moves all aroung those three bolts are most likely the problem. As far as getting to the bolts you have to remove the steering wheel then remove the three phillips screws holding the cover in place, remove the turn signal lever. You may be able to move the cover around enough to get to the bolts without actually remove the ingition cylinder or the cover. The bolts are 10mm.

Nice Drawings

"OPEL GT Owner's Workshop Manual" OWM727 printed by Brookland Books
ISBN 1 870642 864 which has a green & yellow cover and is still available new on eBay from time to time ( search for "GT Manual") has excellent line drawings of the steering column.

Yup. I already have the column out of the car, and the bearing is very sloppy.
