Talking Unanswered: Lost Keys (was "Silly Request...)

I have found that my GT keys have managed to get misplaced. I had them on a key ring with one of those Opel GT Source rubber key fobs. The one that has the drawn Opel GT. I saw a picture of one on eBay last week, but by the time that I thought of it, it was off the site. I need to get a picture of one of those key fobs, so I can show my wife what the key fob looked like. She will then remember where she put them... I mean where she last saw them. Sorry. If anyone has a picture, please post. I would like to not have to break the steering column, but I also wouldn't mind putting in one of those big red start buttons, either. Before anyone says it, I also had my gas cap key on the ring as well. I would prefer to find the original keys and then to switch to the big red start button with one og those bad boy OttoStarts...

Thanks,

Cliff

If it comes to it, do not break the column. Get a key blank (or two!) and take the whole column to a locksmith. They can make new keys without taking anything apart. Might cost a bit (but still way under $100), but it is cheaper than buying steering column parts.

Better still, remove one of the door handles, take it in and either get the locksmith to make a new key from the code on the door handle shaft, or if he doesn't know how to do that, most can make a key fit the existing tumblers, which in turn will fit the ignition lock. If he doesn't have Opel key blanks, OGTS does.
Or find out where the "CAN OF KEYS" is these days, and get them sent to you. IIRC, there is a huge bunch of spare Opel keys circulating around the USA and since there are only so many Opel key codes of that era, one is bound to fit your car. I think the rule is to find the key that fits and then get a new one (five, actually) and return the old one to the can, and continue the can on its journey.\

Sorry for being dense, but exactly what is this Can-O keys, and how does it work? I just try a bunch ofthe keys and once I find the one that works for my car, I put a couple of keys back into the can and ship it to the next fortunate individual? Are the keys already cut? Opel had that few combinations, that a can of keys would pretty much cover allt he combinations???

Thanks,

Cliff

You add to the collection ONLY if you have keys you no longer have the lock or car for. I DO NOT want any uncut keys, just old ones that no one else wants, and they have to be Opel keys. If you find a key or two that works, keep them and have copies made.
