GT steering wheel removal
It takes a special puller with off-set shouldered legs that insert into the holes on each side of the splined shaft. DO NOT TRY TO BEAT IT OFF you will bung up the end of the steering shaft. Look in the search section under GT steering wheel pullers and there are some pictures of the puller (I think) they are not hard to make and will save you a lot of frustration.

I can't resist
Some will try to beat it off but if you want to get it off, use some good lube and rub it really good....
Wait...oops....we're talking a steering wheel, huh? As said above, you need a steering wheel puller. Once you get one, it's not that hard to remove it. Be careful with the horn assembly. They aren't too easy to find.

I would do a search for steering wheel removal and see what comes up. I use a standard puller with a pair of 6" long bolts with a 1/2" head, grind the heads into an oval shape that fits inside the slots of the steering wheel hub. Loosen the nut, but do not remove, then use the puller and tighten it until the steering wheel pops loose. HTH.

Here are some pictures of the type puller that many of us use. See post # 64.

Some of the nicer steering wheel puller kits have what is supposedly puller legs for the newer style GM steering wheels. Funny thing is they look a lot like what Opel used back in the 70's and they work on Opels. ![]() Harold |

Depends what you're trying to remove. All the notes here apply to the steering wheel and the hub. If all you want to do is take the wheel off, remove the cap and undo the 6 hex head screws. 5 minutes.

Then you need to remove the hub. Use one of the pullers listed above. I have the 4 slot one and it works fine for removing the steering wheel hub.

I have had the hardest time taking the steering wheel off the Manta from time to time. I have done the make it your self tool as described in this thread and to look like the opel tool. sometime it work most times it slipped and and cause me to cuss. To fix this I came up with a solution that works every time in a nano second.
Here is what I use now and it works very well. I use six inch bolts that have an OD the size of the two holes in the hub/. I use a standard nut that will fit the bolt. I loosen the steering column bolts to the dash lowering it just enough to remove the plastic shroud around the steering column. Then I use the standard steering puller like in the post above. I disconnect the battery and slide the six inch blots through the hub hole and reach behind the hub with my fingers and thread the nut over the bolt. I position the puller and do the same on the other hole rotating the steering wheel so the second hole is on the lower side making it easy to reach back behind the hub and install the second nut. Now you have a secure and safe way to remove the hub. Just apply enough twist to the puller center chase to cause the hub to come loose. A couple of tips to keep hub reinstall centering easy. Keep wheels straight. Mark the shaft and hub using alignment marks/ paint etch etc. Reinstall to match alignment marks. Hope this helps Ron |
