Unanswered: Steering shaft installation problem

Hello all,

I finishing work on the 71 kadett. I removed the steering rack and replaced the rubber boots. That went well. But I'm trying to insert the steering shaft into the pinion shaft end and it doesn't seem to want to fit. The collar is completely removed and slides up the shaft as I try to align the two ends. The fit seems really tight but I can't even get it started, even with the help of another person. So what's the trick? I can't wait to get this thing going. I'll ahve a complete summary of my $150 purchase with just 25,346 miles on the odo. A compete registerable/insurable/respectable/unusual ride for less than $500.
