Unanswered: rims for my 70 Rallye

The current rims on the car are 13". They have no 'clips' for the centre cap.

I am looking for a set that will accept the OPEL centre cap and the beauty ring.

Can one locate aftermarket rims that the OPEL centre cap will clip on to or will I have to buy original rims?

13" is the right size, I doubt you'll find an aftermarket product like the original wheel, which has a raised area the center cap sits in. There are lots of original wheels out there though, contemporary GTs had the same. A crew has been going up to northern PA parting out about 17 rusted out mantas, you could probably get a set that way and redo them nicely. Ask Goin Manta if he's heading back up this year.

Ray;
There are two different wheels that use that same center cap, I have attached pics of both below.

Gene will correct me if I'm wrong, but I've only seen the round holed (not the slotted) version on Mantas.

No Clips!!

Rallye wheels have no clips because the caps would fall off while 'vigorously' off-roading. GT wheels have the clips - so GTs can 'look good' on the street.
The four slot wheel is for early model GTs - the 14-hole wheel was used later. Might well be the other way around for Rallyes as my 1967 Kadett Rally has the 14-hole wheels ... with no clips, or caps or beauty rings or other dress-ups - except for nice chrome domed wheel nuts.

One way of getting wider wheels with the Opel GT centre (with clips) is to remove the Opel centre from a standard wheel and get it welded into a wider rim. We get one-piece bare rims here for use on trailers - they are blanks without centres and are ideal for this use. Some even have "Made in U.S.A." stamped on them - so they should be available over there ... with luck!

I can't say about the other years, but when I bought my 74 Rallye new, it came with the Rallye (Slotted Rims). They are still on it too. Jarrell

I have the centre caps on hand and I plan to get a set of new tires also.

The look I am trying to achieve is like the rims in the attached pic.

Gt ....

Those are just standard late model ('71/'72) GT wheels, trims and caps.

Jarrell,
I may be wrong about the Manta wheels, but I've read in various places that all the Manta's 1974 on came with the "sport" stamped four spoke wheels and small spinner, not the ones with the big center insert as Ray is talking about. Same on my stock '74. Doesn't talk about overseas models of course, and I'm happy to be corrected.

Jim, you are quite correct, I was wrong. I was under the impression that was what he was speaking of. My brain is gone. Jarrell

Jim;
The later model Rally wheels, 73-75 were stamped, but, were stamped "Manta", Wagon", or "GT", but, no "spinner" center cap.

Chrome wheels

Keep in mind the correct wheels for that 70 Kadett Rallye where chromed completely, not painted as such the GT and had the center cap attached. But no beauty ring. 68-69 Kadett had chromed wheels 14 hole style also, but no center cap or beauty rings
