Depends on how much money you want to spend.
For the do it yourselfer... I would suggest some Rust-O-Leum primer from the hardware store. Kryolan has spray paint in a can in black for the rim base, and silver for the outer rim, and clear for a sealing coat. The nice thing about Kryolan is they have a new RED spray nozzle that allows you to spray flat either vertically or horizontally = smoother consistant coverage. For the pay to have it done-er... I would suggest a body shop do a primering of the rims, minimum of two coats of Acrylic silver, and one or more coats of clear coat. PPG is an excellent paint brand. |

If you want it to look good for a while then use 2 part polyurethane which you will have to get from an automotive paint supply house, and shoot it with a HVLP gun.

I thought about powder coating, I understand it's about $75.00/wheel. Figured I could prime and paint them myself. With the center caps and NOS beauty rings I have, felt that would look good enough. Thanks for all the info.

Miller's quoted me 75 per wheel for my Borbet T Types, 2 part powdercoat. John Lewis was more then reasonable with my uncle's ATS classics.
They make wheel paint. You can put as many coats on as you want as long as they're put on before it cures.

I like the all black tire / wheel combo seen the last couple years on some Lotus Exige & Elite models. It's a very down-to-business look.
Personally, I'm running the original Opel steel rims (which I painted black) with original chrome trim rings & centers. I'm also running old-school 5-slot mags from the 70's when I'm out for a twisty trip. |

If you want a cheap good do-it-yourself rattle can paint, try Dupli-Color High performance wheel coating. For a paint out of a can, it lays down flat and has a good shine. If you don't like the results, you can go the next step up which might be a color base coat followed with a clear coat. I would agree that powder coating would be the ultimate job, unless you like the chrome look.

If you do paint them your self, the long term durability of the paint is an issue to watch out for. I bought wheel paint from East wood and had great luck with it. While at my local PPG store, one of the ole timers gave me a great tip. He sold me a spray can of "Cut In" Ureathane Clear. Same as the clear in Base coat/clear coat, for the door jamb area, but he advised using it on wheels. Its now been a little over 3 years and there have been no issues with the clear being too soft. The wheels have even had 2 sets of tires mounted with no scuffing. The tire shop was impressed with the durability.

Is the paint an automotive finish type paint or is it standard off the shelf generic stuff? If it is a rattle can of non auto type paint be very careful, the aluminum paints like that, even the aluminum from Eastwood, rub off even after they are dry which also leaves a dull spot where the surface is touched or rubbed. I have tried all of them and the only way to prevent the problem is to put clear coat over the aluminum, but then it changes the appearance of the finish a little bit.

You could order Diamond Clear from Eastwood and then do a test piece to make sure it is compatible.
