"As experts warn that action is necessary now to curb the booming rise in international air travel - the most polluting form of transport - jet-setting celebrities appear to show no signs of ditching their Lears. Just one trans-Atlantic flight produces emissions equivalent to 40,000 cars traveling from London to Leeds."

The Scotsman online Nov 20, 2000

"Just one trans-Atlantic flight produces emissions equivalent to 40,000 cars traveling from London to Leeds."

40 000 cars traveling approximately 200 miles, lets play with those numbers a bit. If it was only a single vehicle that car would have to travel a total of 8 000 000 miles to produce the same approximate amount of pollution that a single jet traversing the Atlantic once would produce.

Traveling at a rate of 60MPH it would take over 15 years of continous driving to travel a distance that great. Wheras one transatlantic flight takes between 7 to 8.5 hours.

One could drive a distance equivalent from going to the moon and back a total of 10 times and still have over a few hundred thousand miles to spare.

After looking at these numbers the bleeding hearts can have my cat and air pump free, gas and oil guzzling rotary with its 17 highway miles per gallon when they pry my cold dead foot from the accelerator.
