replacing gasket on rear differential cover.

Well the rear end is ready to go back in. All I need to do is bolt the rear diff cover back on. I have a new gasket and I just wondered what the proper procedure for attaching it is. Gasket spray adhesive, yes or no? Is there a front and back to that gasket?
Thanks

the paper gasket can be applied either way. I have always had good success with permetex gasket maker #2( this kind stays soft ) applied to both sides of the paper gasket. Allow to dry for a few minutes and then install. I also use this gasket maker on the threads of the bolts that hold the cover on espicially the lower ones as it will remove the possibility of leaks. This method also doubles as way to insure the bolts will not work them selves loose over time. hope this helps Ron

Thanks Ron. I figure there's several techniques and products out there and I'm seeing what folks think are best. I'll check that product out.

If it didnt leak before you took it apart, I agree with the above. But would like to add that you should use a VERY thin layer of sealer(almost nothing just to hold it in place while you tighten really) and make sure both mating surfaces are perfectly clean! If it did leak before you need to examine the cover for dents as alot of people like to pick the car up at the pumpkin with a floor jack and it usually ends up bending the cover if its not done correctly. Ive had to pound them flat with a small hammer to get them to seal up again. The bottom bolt(left or right) is the one that you loosen to drain so its really the only one you need to worry about. I'm a firm believer that if the factory didnt use sealer you shouldnt have to either.
