Noise after pinion seal

Need help . Had a mechanic replace a leaking pinion seal in my 71 gt in the rear end. There is now a noise comming from the back end that is very annoying.It sounds like a brake pad that is always on.Something is rubbing somewhere making the noise.Everything looks good from under neath. Can't figure it out. At this point I am taking it home & driveing it fo a while to see if it goes away & if it doesn't I'll take it back and they'll take it apart again to try & figure it out.I'm hopeing that someone here can point me in the right dirrection or has had this problem & solved it.At this same time I had the oil pan gasket replaced which meant the getrag had to be taken out & put back in . Don't think it's related but thought I'd throw that in.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.Dale

make sure you did not forget to put back the trust cap on the pinion axe

Could it be that the backing plate is rubbing on the drum?

I was also thinking it may be a drum rubbing, but also they might have disturbed the central joint somehow when the torque tube was removed, rather than the pinion itself. Or so you should hope.

Thanks Bill.If your thinking brake drum they didn't do any work on that . It has to be something between the tranny & the pinion seal that they replaced.Something overtightened or missalighned or a bushing or something not put back.Basically your hearing the drive shaft turning when your moving.

Can you properly support the car and let the engine idle and get under it to try to pinpoint the sound? With the car in neutral and the e brake off the tires will usually rotate slowly and you might be able to safely locate your problem. For that matter if you have a helper to rotate the wheel instead of using the engine to, you won't have to contend with engine noise.

If a car comes into the shop with over 30 grand on the clock or is over 3 years old. It's common to do a courtesy brake check even without your knowledge. Hey us grease monkeys need to make a living AND service our customers with there needs.
I would strongly think your mechanic checked the brakes on the 30+ year old car.

Good point .Sure would be nice if they just nudged the brake pad a little off & is scraping a little . Way to think outside the box!!!!

Check to make sure that if they removed the driveshaft that the spring which goes inside the yoke on the tailshaft of the g/box was there and has been replaced. That spring loads the driveshaft back against the dome/button which goes on the end of the pinion to prevent the whole driveshaft 'wandering' back and forward.

Often removed ... and not replaced ... by P.O.s

The shop should remember the spring as it is one of Opel's special features!
