rear axle valve???

hello to all opelers,

any idea what this little thing is?(see picture)
This little valve(??)was located at the top on the rear axle on the
passenger side,I supose it is to let a flow off air in or out??

just curious

Valve

It appears to be the air valve for the earlier Opel GT rear end-went on top of right side axle housing-might have been used with kadett/manta also. Took me a second-never pulled it all the way out to see other side

Yes!

That valve vents the inside of the rear axle housing to atmosphere so that as the diff oil and more importantly the air inside the differential heats up on a trip - the air can escape without being pressurised. If it is not used then the presure build-up inside the differential will force the hot oil out through the seals in the wheel bearings and on to the rear brakes plus up the torque tube.

So I guess that using it and keeping it unblocked is quite important!

Yes. Making sure that vent is unplugged is a periodic maintenance must on any gearbox. We see them plugged on big trucks all the time, the first sign of blockage is oil running out of the input/output seals.
