if you get a plastic thread plug (like a small bolt used to stop dirt getting down pipes like hydrolic pipes ) you can put a small hole in it and push fit it in for now

The axle vent on my old Dodge Ramcharger had a nut welded to it and a threaded nipple with a tube slipped over it and loosely attached to the body with some slack for axle travel. The tube had a vent cap also but you could probably get by with just making sure the tip of the tube went up and turned back down to prevent water from entering.

I was looking at the other axle last night and that is a press fit item, no threads to it. It is the right size to be tapped for 1/8 NPT. Air vents in that size are common but I'd pull the axle to get the chips out if you take that route. Kevin, try a PM to Husker and see if he'll part with one. He is very close to you and has 2 that are basicly parts.
