Gene that wee button is the "thrust cap" - seems to be drawn twice in the illustration ...
If you look at the wee splined thingie on the front end of the pinion you will see that it is not parralell but is instead "barrell-shaped". Up inside the drive shaft itself at the inner front end of the spline there is a spherical area which pivots on the "button" as the driveshaft wiggles about a bit in the rubber "doughnut" at the other end. So the button sets the longditudinal position of the drive shaft and is the bit that it pivots on - in short: "you need it" ! Where on earth do you get one is the next interesting question ......

I don't have you mailing address on file, lost it during the updating process of the Texas Clubs Roster. PM me with it and the thrust button will be coming your way Monday. I hope that both the early and late model thrust buttons are the same this on is coming off of an early 70 model rear end from a GT. If any knows that it does make a difference let me know so I can dig another one up for Gene. rk |
