Unanswered: Rear axle spare parts
I have a 1970 OPEL GT. For several weeks, i hear a noise from the rear axle (if i am not wrong) when i accelerate quite strongly after a red light and there is another one, from the beginning, when i decelerate. I think that it begins to be serious and would like to check inside to see what is the problem and if possible to solve it. May be it is a little bit loose. Where could i find some spare parts for a 1st generation rear axle and specially a set of "wedges" which was provide officially beofre by Opel. Sorry i am french and my english is quite poor as you can suspect. Thank you for your help. |

Your english is better than some I've seen and they don't have your excuse.
From your description it sounds like the rubber components in the front of the torque tube are to blame not your rear end. This is a common problem on our old cars and is easily fixed. The torque tube donut is the main source of your problem more than likely. Harold |

my torque tube had the no rubber bumper problem and i checked it out 2 weeks ago and im guessing from it bouncing around it caused my pinion gear to shread. Thats why i think my pinion gear is so chewed away.
But the sound i had comming from my rearend was a "growling" sound when i was starting to accelerate from 0mph

The pinion gear is attached to the pinion shaft and is supported by a tapered roller bearing at each end. The torque tube isn't going to affect it. What happens inside the rear end begins inside.
I've found the pinion bearings were loose on all three Opel diffs I've been into. I think that's where the trouble begins.

Sounds like you've got two different problems at the same time.
When your taking off from a red light under heavy throttle..does it sounds like someone under the floor pan with a hammer hitting maybe three or four times? If so look at the motor, trans, or torque tube mounts. The u-joints especially the front can cause vibrations thats speed related. They'll be in tune at certain rpm's.. first gear vibs at 10 mph second gear vibs at 20 mph for example. The front pinion bgr. when going bad is a constant noise at all speeds. Axle bgrs. tend to make more noise when you shift the load from one side to another..trust your ears. Then theres coast and decel noises from the ring and pinion.. oh I've heard the 69-70 axle bgrs are almost impossible to find. Last edited by wrench459; 05-16-2008 at 09:10 PM. |
